Le Grand Rex

Le Grand Rex is a under monument protection standing Parisian cinema , which also serves as a theater and concert hall. Today it holds 2800 spectators (originally 3300) and was built in 1932 based on the model of American film palaces.

The Art Deco building with a “starry sky” and fountain is located at 1 Boulevard Poissonnière, in the 2nd arrondissement , Bonne Nouvelle station (Métro Paris) . It was built for the film producer Jacques Haïk . The Radio City Music Hall in New York City served as a model, the architect was Auguste Bluysen , a specialist in exhibition, tourism and entertainment buildings since the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 . He was advised by the experienced Romanian-American film architect John Eberson . Construction began in 1931 and the opening ceremony took place on December 8, 1932. During World War II (more precisely, from 1940 to 1944), Rex served Wehrmacht as "soldiers cinema", since 1981, it is a monument historique protected.

Every year in April, the Rex hosts the multi-day Jules Verne Festival of Adventure Films.

In December, traditionally the Féerie des Eaux is held here , a combination of a pre-Christmas family film with water features .

Rex club

The le rêve dance café was located in the basement of the building . The empty halls were reopened in 1973 as the Rex Club for disco nights. Rock concerts and parties were also held in the mid-1980s. In 1992 the program was switched entirely to electronic dance music .
