action

2026 is deep beneath the desert of Nevada , a wormhole discovered portal called Ark, with that of a local station from a teleportation to Mars is possible. During archaeological excavations , the remains of a bygone humanoid species are found there and a research facility is being set up on Mars to investigate them more closely. When, twenty years later, the 85 employees of the Union Aerospace Corporation (UAC) facility on Mars were attacked by an unknown attacker, the scientist Dr. Carmack just make an emergency call and initiate quarantine measures before contact with them is lost.

A special command of eight marines is then sent to the research facility. This consists of the troop leader Sarge and Duke, Goat, Destroyer, Portman, Mac, a newcomer named Kid and John “Reaper” Grimm. They are sent on a search and destruction mission to Mars, with the UAC only concerned with retrieving computer data from their anthropological , archaeological and genetic experiments .

The team uses the Ark to reach Mars and orders the Earth location to be locked down. When they arrive on Mars, they will be met by UAC employee Pinky. Reaper finds his twin sister , Dr. Samantha Grimm, and accompanies her to retrieve the data. With the help of the secured research data, the team gets to the bottom of the cause: Using the unearthed fossils from Mars, the researchers discovered a synthetic 24th chromosome (C-24) that could turn humanity into superhumans and lead into a new era without disease. The first human test subject was a death row convict who turned into a monster after the injection , killed the scientists and infected some.

While searching for survivors at the facility, the Marines find the traumatized and injured Dr. Carmack and escort him to the medical lab for treatment; however, it later disappears. The Marines shoot an unknown creature in the genetics lab, who leads them into the facility's sewers , where it attacks and kills Goat. They kill the creature and take it to the medical laboratory, where Samantha does an autopsy and finds that its organs are human. She and Duke at the same time witness Goat rise and suicide by banging his head against a reinforced window . The two are also attacked by a creature, set a trap and soon conclude that it is the mutated Dr. Carmack acts.

The squad methodically tracks down several of the creatures and destroys them. Mac, Destroyer and Portman die in battle. Furious at the loss in this regard, Sarge kills the mutated Dr. Carmack. Samantha, Reaper and Sarge learn that the UAC was experimenting on humans with the extra Mars chromosome (C24) - extracted from the remains of the ancient skeletons - but the mutants fled, causing the outbreak. Samantha and Reaper try to convince Sarge that the creatures are people from the facility who have been mutated by the C24 serum, and that not all infected will completely transform into the creatures. Samantha hypothesizes that some of those injected with C24 develop superhuman abilities but retain their humanity, while others become creatures with a predisposition to violent or psychotic behavior.

When some of the creatures manage to get to Earth through the Ark and slaughter or mutate the research staff, Sarge knows what to do: Kill everyone inside the underground bunker in order to spread to the surface and infect the earth's population absolutely to prevent. However, he wants to secure the research data - which created this threat in the first place. When the Kid - whose first assignment is this - refuses to kill some uninfected survivors - who fearfully hiding in a storage room - he is shot dead by Sarge for insubordination , leading to an altercation between armed Pinky and Sarge. The group is suddenly attacked by creatures that kill Duke and drag Sarge and Pinky away. Reaper is wounded by a ricochet . To keep him from bleeding to death, Samantha injects him with the C24 serum, although he fears that his violent past predisposes him to turn into a creature. He survives, but does not transform into a monster - as Samantha predicted - since, in her opinion, only certain people are susceptible to transformation, while others become the supermen endowed with enormous healing abilities.

When Reaper comes to, he finds that his wounds have healed and Samantha has disappeared. With his new superhuman C24 skills, he fights his way through the facility and can even kill the now mutated and monstrous Pinky before finding the unconscious Samantha and meeting Sarge, who becomes infected and murdered the group of survivors that Kid had discovered earlier . It comes to a fight between Reaper and Sarge, who meanwhile slowly turns into a monster and is also equipped with superhuman powers. Reaper is able to gain the upper hand and in the end manages to teleport Sarge back through the Ark to Mars and destroy him and the research facility with a grenade sent behind him .

Reaper carries his unconscious sister into the elevator and ultimately takes her back to the surface of the earth in Nevada.

background

  • Towards the end of the film, there is a four and a half minute sequence in which one of the film Reapers view from the first-person shooter - perspective sees.
  • While in the computer game the opponents are demons and there is also hell as the setting, the mythical references have been deleted from the film without replacement and the monsters are shown as the result of a mutation. The Space Marines were replaced by the Rapid Response Tactical Squad .
  • Actually, the film was supposed to take place on a fictional planet first, but then the decision was made for Mars, which is also one of the main locations in the games.
  • The well-known weapons from computer games are hardly or not at all used, only the BFG and the chainsaw are used.
  • The film is optically based partly on the game Doom 3 , z. B. the terminals and control units were taken from this, and the look of the facility is very reminiscent of the levels from Doom 3 .
  • One scientist's name is Dr. Carmack . A reference to John Carmack , one of the programmers of the Doom games.
  • One UAC employee is nicknamed Pinky . At the end of the film, he mutates into the Pinky Demon known from the game .

The template

The computer game Doom came on the market in 1993 and brought about the breakthrough for the genre of first-person shooters . Although rumors arose about a film adaptation from time to time, it was only realized after the release of Doom 3 .

Novel to film

The novel of the same name for the film was written by John Shirley and was published by Panini Verlag in 2005 .

C-24

The fictional twenty-fourth pair of chromosomes C-24 affects humans in two different ways. Either it makes them intelligent and strong “ supermen ” or “monsters” who want to extinguish all life.

The genetic predisposition of the patient is decisive here. If you are “bad” because of your genes, you become a “monster”. If you are “good”, you become a “superman”. Samantha Grimm comes to this conclusion because (according to the story) 10% of human DNA has not yet been deciphered. These would then be the genes that decide whether you are “good” or “bad”.

criticism

“The adaptation of the first person shooter game of the same name, which electrified an entire generation, can only do justice to the nerve-tearing and splattered original towards the end . Before that, the film remains average actionware for an irritatingly long time, which is likely to offend game fans for lack of tension and often cheap optics. "

"The movie about the software shows how a special unit armed to the teeth on a military base on a Martian moon defends itself against slimy demons and wandering zombies. That reveals clear "alien" bonds and is as subtle as hammer on the head. Fans have been served similar food in a more bumpy and (even) dizzy way. - Gun-staring macho alien action in a soulless video game look. "
