A video game adaptation is a film based on a video game .
history
Originally, video games were also produced as part of the merchandising of films , which thematically were more or less closely related to the namesake of the games. Since the mid-1990s, due to the growing popularity and cultural influence of video games, there have also been collaborations in the opposite direction: an increasing proportion of video games are subsequently either implemented directly as films or adapted in films inspired by them.
The first real-life version of the game Super Mario Bros., published by Nintendo, was already in 1993. Although well-known actors such as Bob Hoskins , John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper were hired , this first experiment was unsuccessful. In the course of the graphic improvements made possible by technical development and the associated possibilities of " immersion " in the world of computer games as well as the massive spread of computers that were used for games, more and more film studios saw the potential of to benefit from the popularity of the games.
Target audience
In particular, the existing fan base , which was “bought” with the license , can be seen as a target group . They have a disproportionately high probability that they will watch the film, which minimizes the film's economic risk. However, there is a risk of deterring this target group by deviating significantly from the model.
