action

The young Lara Croft works as a bicycle courier in London . She lives an independent life and refuses to take over the company of her father Richard Croft, who has been missing for seven years, the Croft Holding. Lara doesn't want to admit that he should be dead. After after a bike race and a crash with a police car is arrested, Richard Crofts business partner Ana Miller urges her again to sign the papers and to contact her father in the footsteps, as his heir would otherwise expire. Lara reluctantly gives in and gains access to Richard's personal heirlooms, including a key that gives her access to his personal room, but still owes her signature on the inheritance papers.

In the secret room, Lara learns from a video message previously recorded by her father that, in addition to his business life, he had dealt intensively with the myths of the Japanese Queen Himiko , ruler of the Yamatai Empire , before he disappeared. She learns that, according to legend, Himiko had the ability to determine life and death solely through her touch, which is why she is said to have been locked in a secret grave. Lara also finds out where her father was probably last looking for this grave and, despite her father's express instructions to destroy all records about Himiko, goes in search of him. In order to get some money, she pledged the valuable amulet that her father left as a parting gift.

Lara travels to Hong Kong , where she meets Lu Ren, the captain of a small ship and son of the man who brought Lara's father to the island that was probably Yamatai. They also go there together, but are shipwrecked by a violent storm . Lara nevertheless manages to land, where she is knocked unconscious by a heavily armed man. When she comes to, Mathias Vogel, the leader of an expedition that has been on the island for seven years and is looking for Himiko's tomb , tells her that he killed her father years ago. The expedition is carried out on behalf of a secret organization called Trinity , which wants to unleash the mystical powers of Himiko and use them for their own purposes. The expedition uses equipment from a company called Patna . Mathias Vogel lets the workers of the expedition - now also Lara and Lu Ren, who also landed after the shipwreck and was captured by the expedition - work as prisoners and are guarded by armed men. Lara manages to escape with the help of Lu Ren, which she barely survives.

After Lara is almost discovered in the episode, she is forced to kill a mercenary from Trinity . She discovers a strange man who is apparently watching her. After following this into a cave on the edge of the island, she has to discover that the man is her father Richard, who was believed to be dead. He takes care of her wounds and tells her that he found out the true location of Himiko's grave years ago and is hiding on the island so that his findings do not get into Vogel's hands. In spite of his protests, Lara goes back to the camp to take the cell phone there and steal back her father's notes, through which Vogel has already managed to find the location of the grave.

However, Vogel does not manage to open the entrance to the tomb. Lu Ren and most of the men who were compelled to dig by Trinity subsequently start a riot to give Lara time to steal Richard's records. In the midst of the chaos, however, Richard has also reached the entrance of the grave, where he is captured by Vogel. Fearing for her father, Lara opens the grave and together they descend into it. Not least thanks to Lara's skill and intelligence, they survive numerous traps and puzzles, with some of Vogel's men perishing, and finally reaching the sarcophagus of Himiko.

When two mercenaries try to take the body , Himiko infects them and Vogel shoots them. Lara realizes that Himiko had no mystical powers, but a deadly disease which, shortly after physical contact, initiates the disintegration of human cells, against which she was immune. Contrary to the legends, she was not banished to this grave, but had apparently sacrificed herself and let herself be buried here voluntarily to protect her people. Vogel decides to steal one of Himiko's fingers from the grave in order to bring the deadly pathogens to his client Trinity (and finally to be allowed to leave the island). Lara and her father succeed in killing the remaining mercenaries, but Vogel escapes first, while Lara's father is also infected by a sick mercenary and can only slow down the spread of the disease by tying his arm, but cannot stop it. He says goodbye to Lara and stays behind to seal the grave once and for all by detonating numerous explosive charges . In the ensuing fight, Lara succeeds in overpowering Vogel by making him swallow Himiko's severed finger. When his cells begin to disintegrate, she kicks him into the abyss of souls. At the same time, Lara's father releases the explosive charges, the explosion of which causes the entire grave to collapse. Lara barely manages to escape and leave the grave. Together with Lu Ren and the surviving workers of the expedition, they hijack a helicopter from Trinity and escape from the island.

Back in London, Lara signs the inheritance documents and transfers the management to Ana Miller. Only then does Lara accidentally notice that Patna - the company behind Trinity - is owned by Croft Holding. Upon further investigation, she realizes that Ana Miller was the mastermind behind the expedition and that the main battle is yet to come. Lara gets her amulet back from the pawnbroker - and buys two HK USP Stainless pistols.

production

Project development and pre-production

GK Films had already acquired the film rights in 2011, but succeeding Angelina Jolie in the role of Lara Croft in particular proved difficult. The development of the material was also problematic : At the beginning of production there were reports that Marti Noxon ( Buffy - The Vampire Slayer ) would write the script, and Iron Man authors Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby were also in discussion. However, Noxon wrote in September 2014 that her collaboration had ended due to other projects. In February 2015 it was announced that Evan Daugherty ( The Determination - Divergent ) had been hired to develop the script, until Geneva Robertson-Dworet ( Captain Marvel ) was finally given the task together with Alastair Siddons .

On November 17, 2015, the Norwegian director Roar Uthaug came on board, with Kathryn Bigelow , Catherine Hardwicke and Mimi Leder, in particular, women who were treated as directors. Uthaug is thus realizing his first major blockbuster, after he had already drawn attention to himself with Cold Prey - Eiskalter Tod (2006) and The Wave - Die Todeswelle (2015). In April 2016, Oscar winner Alicia Vikander was finally announced as the new Lara Croft. Previously it was reported that Daisy Ridley had been in talks for the role, which later rejected this as "crazy rumor". Walton Goggins was heralded as a villain in December 2016. The majority of the cast was announced in early 2017.

The film was received mixed to positive.

Alicia Vikander's portrayal of Lara Croft has received numerous praise. From the point of view of Daniel Pook from Golem.de, for example, Vikander plays the role very convincingly, whereas the film as a whole couldn't win him completely. For example, “the new screen Lara is actually the right action heroine at the right time - but unfortunately in the rest of the film which is not that great.” The film was praised on the one hand for being “very close to the style of the game model and this largely captures well ”, on the other hand (for example by Jordan Hoffman in Vanity Fair ) criticized for the same reason for lack of originality.

The 4Players editor Michael Krosta described Tomb Raider as "the best film adaptation of the series". Scott Mendelson was of the same opinion, he called the film in Forbes "worlds better" than Simon West's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider , but the film does not allow Vikander to really be Lara Croft until shortly before the end of the film. For Owen Gleiberman from Variety, on the other hand, Vikander's Lara Croft is "perhaps the most grounded and most credible cinema video game protagonist" he has ever seen.

Tim Slagman rates Uthaug's Tomb Raider on Spiegel Online as a “solid action adventure - with fascinating scenes, sure, but also with phases of yawning boredom.” In contrast to many earlier interpretations of Lara Croft, Vikander's Lara is not a “high-gloss male fantasy”, but a “whole normal woman who goes from being a bicycle courier to a superhero. ”Jan Kedves also praises Vikander's performance in the Süddeutsche Zeitung as“ tough, daring [and] realistic. ”Despite the widely praised, more realistic portrayal of the main character, the film lacks strong female characters, criticized the main actress Alicia Vikander in an interview with the BBC later. Besides Lara, only two other female characters can be seen in the film, who, after brief conversations with the main character at the beginning of the film, cannot be seen later.

Gross profit

Production costs of approximately $ 95 million are offset by box office revenues of $ 263 million worldwide, of which approximately $ 55.7 million in the United States and Canada alone. In Germany, the film was seen by around 545,000 viewers in cinemas and grossed almost 6 million US dollars.

continuation

In April 2019, MGM and Warner Bros. confirmed the pre-production of a sequel. Amy Jump is slated to write the script while Vikander is slated to play the lead again. In early September 2019, it was announced that this time Jump's husband Ben Wheatley would be directing. Filming is scheduled to begin in early 2020. In the US, a theatrical release is planned for March 19, 2021.
