Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (TLR for short, also Tomb Raider IV) [ ˈtuːmˌ ɹeɪdə ] (roughly translated: The Last Revelation ) is the fourth part of the Tomb Raider computer game series . The game was developed by Core Design and published by Eidos Interactive . The Last Revelation was launched in November 1999 for Windows , Mac and PlayStation . A little later an implementation for the Sega Dreamcast followed . In this part of the series Lara Croft searches for and finds the amulet of Horus , but thereby triggers a deadly mechanism and has to save the world from the Egyptian god Seth .

action

In 1984, 16-year-old Lara Croft explored the ruins of Angkor Wat in Cambodia together with her mentor Werner von Croy as part of a playable story to find an artifact called Iris. By removing the artifact from its storage location in the temple, von Croy sets an old curse in motion, which among other things sets in motion a mechanism to lock the temple in motion, in which Lara has to leave behind on her escape from Croy.

In 1999 Lara and her local guide search the Tomb of Seth in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt in search of the amulet of Horus . When she discovers this on the sarcophagus of Seth and detaches it from the sarcophagus, she discovers that it represents a prison for the evil Seth, constructed by the god Horus and Pharaoh Semerchet , and that she set Seth free by removing the amulet. Your guide turns out to be Croys' agent who wants to get the amulet into his possession. From then on, Lara sees herself followed by Croys' men.

Her old friend Jean-Yves shows Lara the way to the next place on her journey: In the tomb of Semerchet in Karnak the amulet is stolen from her by Croy, but she finds evidence of an "armor of Horus", with the help of which Seth can be found in Can keep in check: If armor and amulet are placed on Horus' statue below the Great Pyramid of a certain star constellation , the god will be brought to life and Seth could be banished again.

In Alexandria , Lara meets Jean-Yves again, who shows her the way to the palaces of Cleopatra . There Lara finds the armor of Horus, but on her return she finds out that Jean-Yves was kidnapped by von Croy, with which the latter tries to force her armor off. The handover is to take place in Cairo , which is sinking into chaos under the impression of the impending confrontation between two gods. There Lara finds Jean-Yves, who informs her that von Croy is under the influence of Seth. In an old crusader citadel, Lara can remove the amulet from Croy.

There is a showdown in Giza . With the help of the amulet and armor, Lara can summon Horus and lock Seth in the temple below the pyramid. As a cliffhanger, Lara appears to die in the collapse of the temple, even though Croy, who has been freed from Seth's influence, comes to her aid.

Game principle and technology

The game has changed a lot in the fourth part of the series in some parts. So this time around, the title of the series, Tomb Raider, is properly referred to . In the game, Lara Croft actually has to open many graves and find her way through ancient traps.

The character's inventory has also changed. The previously separate parts have been merged, so all objects, weapons (including ammunition) and save and load buttons can be found in a "row". In addition, their inventory was expanded to include illuminated binoculars and a compass for orientation was added. Lara can also use the crowbar to open locked doors that are more difficult. She finds the crowbar in the course of the game.

The weapon arsenal has also been fundamentally changed. Now you can also determine the ammunition for some weapons. The pistols with unlimited ammunition are back. The shotgun is also available again, this time you can switch between cluster and normal ammunition. The Uzi is also present again. The grenade launcher is also slightly modified in the game. You can also change the ammunition here. There are normal grenades , heavy grenades that scatter three more grenades on impact and then explode, as well as stun grenades that leave the enemy indifferent for a brief moment. The revolver is new to the arsenal , but it works just like the Desert Eagle from Tomb Raider III - Adventures of Lara Croft . The crossbow is also new to the arsenal . Her ammunition is normal arrows , poison arrows and arrows that explode on impact.

Both the revolver and the crossbow can be equipped with a laser . This allows you to hit targets more precisely in the game, for example you have to aim and shoot certain traps or buttons with the help of the laser.

The character has some new skills in this game. For example, you can climb poles or ropes. Lara can also reach around edges. In addition, the character can either open or kick in some locked doors normally.

There are 70 secrets throughout the game. If you reach a hidden or secret place, a mysterious sounding tone is played. Unlike the previous Tomb Raider III - Adventures of Lara Croft, there is no bonus level.

opponent

There are two types of opponents: defeatable and invincible. Invincible opponents can often be irritated, i.e. made listless for a brief moment. Opponents in the game are:

  • Scarab swarms that are not vulnerable. They hurt Lara if she gets too close to the swarms.
  • Swarms of locusts that are also not vulnerable. The swarms of locusts are even more dangerous than the swarms of scarabs because they can also fly.
  • Bats that are very easy to defeat.
  • Scorpions , there are two types in the game.
    • little scorpions that can poison Lara.
    • Giant scorpions that can also poison Lara. They are hard to beat.
  • some large birds and beetles.
  • two hammerheads that are difficult to defeat because Lara does not carry underwater weapons.
  • Mummies that are invulnerable. The most they can do is explode.
  • Skeletons that are invulnerable just like the mummies. They can also be blown up. You can also use the laser to shoot their head away, causing them to run around confused. The best thing to do is to shoot them into an abyss with a shotgun.
  • Ghosts . All spirits cannot be destroyed by Lara personally. There are three types.
    • Air spirits that can only be destroyed with the help of a mystical cross.
    • Fire spirits that are only destroyed when they hit an ice spirit or when they come into contact with water. Fire spirits can set Lara up in flames.
    • Ice spirits that can only be destroyed when they hit a fire spirit. Ice spirits can also freeze puddles of water or water channels, which also makes them disappear.
  • Bedouins dressed in blue and armed with firearms. Some of them have the same skills as Lara (dangling, jumping, crouching).
  • Saber swingers, dressed in red, partly armed. Some of them have the same skills as Lara (shimmy, jump, crouch). This type of enemy cannot be attacked while rotating his saber (bullets ricochet off the saber).
  • Sphinx bulls, which are invulnerable. However, in some levels they are very useful, for example to break open a locked door.
  • Knights who are only vulnerable in one place on the chest.
  • Self- firing systems that can only be destroyed by a targeted shot at your tank.
  • Elite Egyptian soldiers advancing with grenade launchers and machine guns.
  • Harpies , which can emit special beams of energy.

Special opponents

  • the Mounted Knight who sits on a very tough horse. After the horse is done, you have to face the knight again.
  • the bull demigod who is invulnerable. He can only be defeated if you ram the footbridge on which he is currently standing. He hits the ground with his big hammer, creating a kind of damaging sound wave .
  • the being from the past . The creature shoots fireballs and can summon locusts.
  • Knights Templar who are invincible. Among other things, they have such a function as the Sphinx bulls by destroying things with their swords.
  • Cleopatra's guards, which are very strong in both long-range and close-range combat.
  • Seth , the boss of the entire game. He is invulnerable, you can only knock him over for a short time with the help of the shotgun.

The Times - Bonus Level

The golden mask of Tutankhamun

For the readers of the British newspaper The Times , a free mini-game was developed in October 1999, which is based on The Last Revelation , but contains only one newly developed level. Here Lara has to work as an archaeologist again, on behalf of the Times. She has to go to the tomb of Tutankhamun and continue the archaeological excavations carried out by Howard Carter in 1922 .

All game settings correspond to the correct game. The intro sequences of the correct game now correspond to the environment in the temple.

In this bonus level, Lara has to find the golden mask of Tutankhamun . It's a comparatively short level.

Production notes

With Lara's death under the ruins of the pyramid, the end of the entire Tomb Raider series seemed to be sealed. The title, The Last Revelation ( The Last Revelation ), pointed to this fact.

In November 2000, however, Tomb Raider continued with the game Tomb Raider Chronicles . However, this part only deals with past adventures of Lara Croft, which are freely retold by friends of Lara's after her supposed death.

With the game Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness , released in June 2003, the story of Lara Croft continues. What happened between this new installment and The Last Revelation , including how she survived her burial under the rubble, is told in the novel Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Amulet of Power .
