action

One year after the events in Tomb Raider , Lara Croft and her companion Jonah are in Siberia in search of the lost city of Kitesch , which, according to legend, is said to be a source of immortality. A thief had previously stolen documents from the Crofts' property on behalf of the secret organization Trinity, which refer to Siberia. Lara is thus in competition with an ancient organization that has considerably more resources and does not shy away from brutal action. Lara and Jonah are separated after an avalanche and Lara is on her own in the icy mountains.

A flashback follows. Lara is a popular tabloid target because she appears to have the same goals as her late father. With his almost delusional search for the artefact of immortality, he had lost his reputation as an archaeologist and apparently finally committed suicide. In London she tells Ana, her father's acquaintance, about her new discoveries and then sets off for Syria, which has been torn by civil war . On the trail of a mysterious prophet, she meets members of the Trinity organization and their brutal leader, Konstantine, for the first time in an ancient temple complex. Lara triggers the explosive devices set by Trinity and is able to flee in the ensuing chaos.

Back in Siberia, Lara is quickly drawn into an escalating conflict between the Trinity fighters and a local, mysterious guerrilla group called "The Remaining". These seem to have lived in isolation for centuries and some of them use medieval weapons and armor. When she tries to spy on Trinity's base, Lara is captured. Apparently Trinity also arrested Ana and Konstantin tried to elicit her knowledge of the artifact from Lara by strangling Ana. After that doesn't work, Ana drops her cover. She has long been active for Trinity, hired by them to kill Richard Croft. She is also Konstantine's sister. Ana is seriously ill and strengthens Constantine in his belief that he is one of God's elect. She hopes for salvation from the source of immortality and goes over corpses for this goal. Lara is able to free herself and another prisoner named Jacob and together they make their way to the village of those who remain. Jacob is apparently the leader of this group. Together with Lara, the remaining are preparing for the final battle with Trinity. In combat, the fierce onslaught of technologically superior attackers can only be repulsed with high losses. After this defeat, the Trinity fighters turn to the retreat for the remnant, where the old, the sick and children sought refuge before the battle, and cause a bloodbath there.

Lara can also turn off the attackers here and thus finally wins the trust of those who remain. Jacob shows her the way to an underground library, which should contain a map that leads to the source of immortality. However, this is guarded by the "immortals", the former army of Kitesch, which has become immortal due to the spring and kills every intruder. The expedition from Trinity is wiped out by the immortals with Greek fire , while Lara gets to the map unharmed and can bring it to Jacob. Here she meets up with Jonah again. The map is deciphered and shows the true position of Kitesch - the city is located directly under the glacier. During a siege by Mongolian troops, the defenders had their weapons aimed at the ice and thus buried the city. Jonah is kidnapped by Trinity shortly afterwards, and Konstantine can also steal the card. Lara is able to free Jonah, but Trinity now also has knowledge of Kitesch's position and tries brutally to blast her way to the city through the ice, while Lara uses a secret entrance. In the lost city there is one last great battle, which the immortals can quickly decide for themselves. Trinity's mercenaries are overrun, while Constantine is defeated in a duel with Lara. When Lara wants to leave him fatally wounded, he talks about Trinity killing Lara's father - you can either leave him, whereupon he burns, or kill him yourself with a knife. The final confrontation between Ana, Lara and Jacob takes place in the Chamber of Souls. As it turns out, Jacob is the prophet and one-time king of Kitesch, immortal for millennia and tied to the fate of the source.

Ana shoots Jacob and wants to use the source of immortality for herself, while immortals approach from all sides. In the last second Lara can destroy the spring and thus condemns all warriors and Jacob to death. This finally finds redemption.

In a post-credit scene , Ana and Lara can be seen on their way through the Siberian tundra. Here Lara confronts her stepmother one last time and wants to know about the exact circumstances of her father's death. Before Ana can confess, however, she is killed by a sniper. Then you can see Lara in the crosshairs and hear the shooter's conversation with a stranger, who spares Lara for the moment.

Additional content

Several fee-based content has been published for the game, which either complement the plot or contain additional game modes. There are also various additional weapon and equipment sets as well as multiplayer maps and decks of cards with various bonuses and abilities.

Baba Yaga - Temple of the Witch

Lara has to explore an additional area in which supposedly the Slavic folklore witch Baba Yaga lives. She allegedly abducted the father of young Nadia, whom Lara is supposed to find and free. Lara finds out that a Soviet prisoner of war used the pollen growing there to make traps in order to use their hallucinogenic effects to use the fear and superstition of the Soviet soldiers to protect themselves from them. Lara becomes a victim of the pollen herself and, under the influence of the hallucinations, has to fight her way through the area and take on (imaginary) demon wolves and the witch herself.

Cold darkness awakens

Lara has to explore an old Soviet bunker in which Trinity has released a pathogen that turns people into zombie- like beings. This pathogen was originally part of a secret Soviet research program to create super soldiers who shouldn't feel pain or fear.

Blood ties & Lara's nightmare

In Blood Ties , Lara has to find proof in Croft Manor that the property rightfully belongs to her after the death of her parents, otherwise the house would be handed over to her uncle. Lara's nightmare is basically identical to blood ties , but in the eponymous nightmare Lara has to fight against hordes of zombies in order to recapture the property.

Publications

In addition to the standard version, a Collector's Edition has also been released, which contains the game, an approx. 30 cm tall plastic Lara Croft figure, a travel diary with an artificial leather cover, a replica of Lara's necklace and a steel book. To mark the 20th anniversary of the Tomb Raider brand, a 20 Year Celebration Edition was published on October 11, 2016 , which includes all previous additional content of the game, the first edition also includes an artbook with a display in a cardboard slipcase.
