Nixxes Software BV is a Dutch computer game developer from Utrecht . The studio specializes in porting computer games to additional platforms. In the past, the company worked mainly on behalf of the publisher Eidos Interactive and its later parent company Square Enix .
history
The company was founded in 1999 by Jurjen Katsman. The company name is based on the nickname "NiX" used by Katsman in the demo scene . Katsman had previously worked for the British publisher Eidos Interactive , which sent him to its subsidiary Crystal Dynamics in the USA in 1998 to take a look at how technical developments work there. After a few months, however, Katsman made the decision to return to the Netherlands. He received a request from Crystal Dynamics whether he would like to port the Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver for the Dreamcast game console . Initially started as a one-man company in Katsman's attic, Nixxes received further orders from Crystal Dynamics, including their core brand Tomb Raider . Since the takeover of Eidos by the Japanese publisher Square Enix , orders from other development studios within the group have also been added, including core brands such as Deus Ex (for Eidos Montreal ) and Hitman (for IO Interactive ). Nixxes was often involved in the projects from the beginning of the programming phase and developed the portings for simultaneous publication in parallel with and in coordination with the main development studio.
According to Katsmans in an interview in 2011, the company does not aim to develop in-house, as Katsman has no passion for game design and sees his focus on technical service.
