Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light ( dt .: Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light ) is a computer game , which in 2010 by the US development studio Crystal Dynamics as an offshoot to the franchise Tomb Raider was released. In contrast to the main series, the action adventure is not limited to the main character Lara Croft , but is geared towards cooperative interaction with a second player. It was released as a downloadable title for Windows , Xbox 360 , PS3 and iOS . In 2014 a successor came onto the market with Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris .

action

The plot revolves around the magic mirror of smoke. This was used over 2000 years ago in South America by the guardian of darkness Xolotl to smash the armies of his opponent Totec, the guardian of light. With the mirror, Xolotl was able to summon an army of hideous creatures. But Totec was ultimately able to defeat Xolotl and lock him in the mirror. Then he became the eternal guardian of his competitors in the form of a statue. Lara Croft learns about this myth and goes in search of the mirror, which she can ultimately find. But a local warlord steals the mirror and frees Xolotl from his prison. Totec is also awakened and warns of the danger from Xolotl if it is not stopped before dawn. Depending on the number of players, Lara Croft and Totec go either together or separately in search of Xolotl.

Game principle and technology

Unlike the main series, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light has a rigid isometric camera perspective . The game is designed as a co-op game for two players, but can also be played alone. A second player can join the game at any time. The first player always controls Lara Croft, the second takes on the role of Totec if necessary. Depending on the number of players, the levels can differ, since in the single player mode no AI takes on the role of the second character. Both characters differ in their skills. Lara Croft has two pistols and a grappling hook, Totec spears, which can be used both as a weapon and as a tool. The content of the game is to roam graves, solving puzzles and fighting enemy creatures.

Production notes

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light was designed as a new offshoot parallel to the next part of the main series after the completion of Crystal Dynamics' first Tomb Raider trilogy ( Legend , Anniversary , Underworld ). It should be the prelude to a new side row. Like the three previous Tomb Raider games, the game uses the crystal engine. It was officially presented in a playable version at E3 2010 .

The game was released on Xbox Live Arcade on August 18, 2010 , and about a month later, on September 28, it was finally released on PlayStation Network and via the online distribution platform Steam . In December 2010, Crystal Dynamics also released a revised version for iOS. It contains fewer levels and does not have access to the download extensions, but is otherwise identical to the original version.

There are five download extensions. All the Trappings , Things That Go Boom and A Hazardous Reunion contain new levels, plus two packages with alternative characters from other Eidos series ( Raziel & Kain and Kane & Lynch ).
