1UP.com was an American online magazine focusing on computer games .
history
1UP was launched in 2003 by the media company Ziff Davis as the website of the computer game magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly , as the magazine needed a new online presence due to the sale of GameSpot to the Sendai Media Group. Over time, 1UP developed into the central online offer for all computer game publications by the publisher. The website featured editorial reports, news, computer game reviews and video clips. Similar to a print magazine, 1UP.com published special one-week “online cover stories” (for example, on Soulcalibur 3 , The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Virtua Fighter 5 ). That meant new articles on the topic every day in the form of new detailed reports, developer interviews, screenshot galleries, video recordings of the game and / or video documentation about the development studio or the developers.
In 2006, Ziff Davis discontinued the computer game print magazine Computer Gaming World in favor of the newly founded magazine Games for Windows . The magazine's website has also been integrated into 1UP. When the magazine was discontinued in April 2008, the format was continued as a pure online publication as part of 1UP.
1UP was sold in 2009 to the online network UGO Networks , which belongs to the Hearst Corporation and which in turn was taken over in 2011 by the News Corp subsidiary IGN Entertainment . Eventually, IGN was acquired by Ziff Davis in February 2013, returning 1UP to its original publisher. Shortly after the acquisition, however, Ziff Davis announced that the company would focus on the IGN and AskMen formats . 1UP was discontinued together with GameSpy and UGO Entertainment, part of the editorial team was transferred to IGN.
