Computer Gaming World was an American print magazine for computer games.

description

The focus of Computer Gaming World was on providing information, test reports and reports on the subject of computer games, with a focus on DOS and Windows games. Other platforms were also taken into account, especially in the early years with home computers , but were not a focus. The treatment of console games, especially from the mid-1990s, was covered by sister publications within the publisher, such as the Electronic Gaming Monthly . The magazine gave no rating for a long time until a five-star system with half steps was finally introduced in 1994, which was retained until April 2006.

The publication, which was also sold in Canada, was published for the first time in November 1981 by Golden Empire Publishing , editor-in-chief was Russell Sipe . While the magazine was initially published every two months, it was not increased to nine issues a year until 1986, and from 1988 onwards the magazine was published monthly. In 1988 the magazine received the Origins Award for the best professional adventure game magazine in 1987. At the beginning of the 1990s the number of issues increased significantly, and in November 1992 the 100th issue was finally published. Also in 1992 Johnny Wilson succeeded Russell Sipe, who remained with the magazine as publisher until 1995. In 1993 Sipe sold the magazine to the US media group Ziff Davis . In 1999, Wilson left the editorial office and was succeeded by George Jones until 2002. He was eventually replaced by Jeff Green , who was in charge of the paper until he was discontinued in November 2006.

According to information from Media Distribution Services, the magazine's reach in 2003 was around 300,000 copies, just behind the competing magazine PC Gamer (US) from Future Publishing . In August 2006, the parent company Ziff Davis announced a cooperation with Microsoft . The deal included the acquisition of the official Games for Windows magazine . In the course of this, the Computer Gaming World was discontinued in order to avoid competition from in-house, and the editorial team was transferred to the new publication. The online activities were bundled on the 1UP platform, which also belongs to Ziff Davis . In November 2006, issue 268 was the last issue of Computer Gaming World. Games for Windows stayed in print until April 2008, when it was also discontinued and incorporated into 1UP as a pure online publication.
