Sir Derek George Jacobi , CBE , (born October 22, 1938 in Leytonstone , London , England ) is a British actor .

Live and act

Derek Jacobi is the only child of Daisy Gertrude, née Masters and Alfred George Jacobi, who ran a candy store and worked as a tobacconist in Chingford . His great-grandfather immigrated from Germany to England in the 19th century.

Jacobi was born in Leytonstone in east London and studied at Cambridge University for some time before discovering his passion for acting. After the role of Edward II in Cambridge, Jacobi joined the Birmingham Repertory Theater immediately after graduating in 1960 . Laurence Olivier was impressed by his skills and cast him as Cassio in his 1965 film adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello . The real breakthrough came in 1976 with I, Claudius (German title: Ich, Claudius, Kaiser und Gott ) , a widely acclaimed television adaptation of the bestseller by the author Robert Graves . In 1994 he was named a Knight Bachelor for his long service to British theater .

Jacobi appeared in many Shakespeare productions, including several film adaptations of Hamlet . He became known to a broad television audience in 1994 through the role of "Brother Cadfael" in the film adaptations of the historical crime novels by Ellis Peters . In 1995 Jacobi became artistic director of the Chichester Festival Theater together with Duncan Weldon and played there for the first time the role of Uncle Vanya in the drama by Anton Chekhov . In Ridley Scott's Gladiator (2000) he played the Senator Gracchus . After an Emmy as a supporting actor in 1989, Jacobi played in his first guest role on American television in 2001 in an episode of the television series Frasier, the worst Shakespeare actor in the world. That promptly earned him another Emmy award. In early 2006, Jacobi was in Len Wiseman's Underworld: Evolution as Alexander Corvinus , the forefather of all vampires and werewolves.

Personal

Derek Jacobi has lived with his partner Richard Clifford, who is also an actor, since 1977. In 2006 the two entered into a registered partnership . They live in Primrose Hill , London .
