Basils Liebe is a British feature film directed by Radha Bharadwaj based on the 1998 novel Basil by Wilkie Collins .

action

This is where the original Basil from 1852 by the great Victorian writer Wilkie Collins was implemented on film.

The young nobleman Basil is under great pressure from his father's side to become an ambitious and honorable man. But through a strong but fleeting passion, he becomes the victim of an insidious intrigue.

The family lives in a manor house that is open to the public. On one of these days, Basil and his siblings watch the visitors. Among them is a pretty girl with blond hair who his older brother Ralph falls in love with instantly. Some time later it turns out that the girl is pregnant and the girl's father approaches Frederick. But he shows neither interest in the honor of the pregnant woman nor in the happiness of his son. Ralph is outcast.

Soon afterwards, Basil's mother dies. Basil becomes a student and becomes more and more lonely. A profound change occurs unexpectedly. The charismatic John Mannion saves him from a predicament and introduces him to Julia Sherwin. But this is not up to date. Nevertheless, Basil lets herself into a relationship with her. Just before he can inherit at twenty-one, he marries her in an exuberance of passion.

The beautiful, however, is very reserved and only makes concessions when she receives gifts. She even wishes that Basils mother (Windemere Halls) would take over the house for her. When he unexpectedly visits his friend John, he finds his wife in his bed. He turns back injured. When he later confronts the couple, he experiences a fit of anger. He only comes to again in his home bed and has a reunion with his childhood sweetheart Clara.

criticism

“The film… unfortunately remains a bit clichéd and not necessarily multilayered in terms of plot technology. Although the portrayal of the epoch is quite understandable and the main actors Slater and Leto deliver convincing performances, the implementation once again does not come close to their original and in places suffocates in kitsch-laden old friends. Neither outstanding nor overly dreary, but rock solid. "
