action

In the 19th century, lepers were isolated on the Hawaiian island of Molokaʻi . Religious priest Damian de Veuster volunteered to look after the sick on the island. There he gives consolation to the sick and celebrates services in the dilapidated chapel. When after three months he has the opportunity to return home, he wishes to stay on the island. He befriends the Protestant William Williamson, who dies to his grief a little later.

He gets some hope when he and Dr. Kalewis distributed a medicine from China to the islanders, which has already achieved initial success in Trinidad. A little later, Dr. Kalewis informed him that he wanted to get married and could no longer live on the island.

Princess Liliuokalani of Honolulu visits the island and is touched by the fate of the sick. On the initiative of Father Damian and with his active support, a new church is being built on the island.

Father Damian is dismayed when Dr. Kalewis noticed symptoms of leprosy in him. Dr. Clifford's brother sends Joseph Dutton to the island to take care of Father Damian. He tells Father Damian that a hospital is to be built in Honolulu with money that was intended for Father Damian. For this, the mother of the order Marianne wants to send six nuns to the island after Father Damian had asked the government in vain for religious sisters for support. Prime Minister Gibson and Reverend Appleyard take immediate action to prevent this; Father Damian's intervention remains unsuccessful. Only with the intervention of Princess Liliuokalani does the situation resolve.

Although Father Damian is getting weaker and weaker due to his illness, he continues to work tirelessly for the islanders. He collapses at the altar; Mother Marianne takes care of him. A little later, Father Damian dies of his illness.
