occupation

Titanic - Blood and Steel is a twelve-part, internationally produced mini-series that was created in 2012, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic in April 1912. The focus of this series is not the tragic maiden voyage of the ship, but the prehistory; It tells of the construction of the "unsinkable" Titanic .

action

Dr. Mark Muir is a young metallurgist who graduated from university and served in the Royal Navy, who is sponsored by the wealthy US American JP Morgan. On behalf of Morgan, he travels from New York City to Belfast to the Harland and Wolff shipyard there . Here he is supposed to help build one of the greatest ships of all time - the Titanic . In Belfast he met the Italian Sofia Silvestri, who worked as a copyist for construction plans at the shipyard. He falls in love with the young woman.

Belfast is a torn city with numerous conflicts raging. Shipyard workers demand fairer working conditions and, under the charismatic leader Jim Larkin, stand up for the right to form a union. Also a Protestant minority - the members of the so-called "First Class" - suppresses the Catholic majority in Belfast, which in turn comes from the "Third Class". There is also the struggle of the unionists against that of the separatists, people who break away from London and want to see Ireland independently.

In the midst of this chaos, the Titanic is being built - a symbol that is intended to mark the dawn of a new era for its builders. But Mark soon reached his limits when he tried unsuccessfully to convince the ship designer Thomas Andrews of the need for better steel for the outboard walls. Even watertight bulkheads up to the upper deck or the recommendation of more lifeboats on the ship are rejected by Bruce Ismay, the head of the White Star Line . These innovations fall on conservative deaf ears. Andrews endorses Mark's ideas, but because of the balancing act between shipbuilder and accountant, he only supports Mark very half-heartedly.

But Mark Muir also has to fear failure privately. So he has a secret. His real name is Markus Malone, he is Catholic. When the board finds out, Lord Pierri has to fire him, but his sponsor JP Morgan is convinced of Mark's abilities and forces him to be reinstated. He was once sent to London by his father after Mark had impregnated the young Siobhan Doyle six years earlier. While Siobhan died in childbed in a women's convent, his child, a daughter, survived. Mark didn't know about it. When he learns the whole truth, he goes in search of his girl, who has now been adopted by a strange couple, although the search is increasingly straining his relationship with Sofia. She should first marry Andrea Valle, an apprentice of her father, the sculptor Pietro Silvestri. But Sofia rejects Andreas' marriage proposal.

Sofia's sister Violetta falls in love with the daring Conor McCann, who initially works on the Titanic at the shipyard , but is later released after an argument. Conor joins a resistance group fighting for the separation, but is killed in action. Conor's brother Michael then takes care of Violetta and her and Conor's son.

Mark's search for his daughter ends in a dead end. Disappointed also with the management of the Harland & Wolff shipyard - Lord Pirrie blames a pilot for the collision of the RMS Olympic with the HMS Hawke - he would initially like to resign. But Thomas Andrews asks him to join the Titanic's maiden voyage as a member and head of the so-called Guarantee Group . Like her sister Violetta, Sofia also wants to go to New York City with her husband Michael . Everyone board the Titanic . Mark walks past a woman with her daughter in a corridor. This is his child, which he doesn't know.

The End

The miniseries has a rather open ending. The viewer knows about the consequences of that maiden voyage; However, he does not learn anything about the fate of the main actors - although they are fictional.
