Ian McElhinney (born August 19, 1948 in Belfast ) is a Northern Irish actor .

life and career

McElhinneys first role was in the TV movie Cowboys in 1981. Films in which he participated, for example, Colin Gregg Lamb alongside Liam Neeson in 1985, Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet 1996 or Gil Kenan's City of Ember - escape from the Darkness from 2008 alongside Saoirse Ronan and Bill Murray . He also played in numerous television series, including The Clinic , Single-Handed or The Tudors , where he played Pope Clement VII . His biggest role to date is that of Barristan Selmy in the HBO series Game of Thrones . In 2016 he took on the role of General Dodonna in the Antholgy film adaptation of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story .

McElhinney is married to actress Mary Jones .
