The Frankenstein Chronicles is a British television series starring Sean Bean . The first broadcast of the six-part first season took place on November 11, 2015 on the British broadcaster ITV . The German-language first broadcast was on April 19, 2016 on the pay-TV channel TNT Serie . In this reinterpretation of the Frankenstein myth, the protagonist John Marlott encounters several famous personalities of the 19th century, including Frankenstein author Mary Shelley and the poet William Blake .

action

John Marlott was inspector in London in 1827. The police are about to arrest a gang of opium smugglers when Marlott comes across the body of a girl. Due to the circumstances of the death and the condition of the corpse, because the victim is a being sewn together from the body parts of eight children, Marlott is commissioned by Interior Minister Sir Robert Peel to lead the investigation and to maintain confidentiality. Apparently a scientist tries to bring the dead back to life with body parts and even commits murders to get the necessary “spare parts”. Marlott and policeman Nightingale do everything in their power to track down the man. Fatally, a journalist found out the connections and published a newspaper article about the Frankenstein murders, which caused great unrest in the population and threw the inspector far behind in his work. The Lord Daniel Hervey is increasingly emerging as the perpetrator. Marlott, convinced of his guilt, sets out to search the hospital grounds. There he frees a young girl who was held captive by Hervey's loyal servant Lloris, but now gets into Hervey's hands. When Marlott wakes up a few hours later, he is covered in blood and a lifeless female body lies on his kitchen table. Although Marlott protests his innocence, he ends up being sentenced to death for murder.

Three years after his execution and subsequent resurrection, ex-policeman Marlott flees the forensic psychiatry to seek revenge on Lord Daniel Hervey. But before he knows it, he finds himself in a series of new brutal murders and takes up the fight against evil again.

Reviews

Bernd Graff from the Süddeutsche Zeitung judged: “These bone-deep British 'Chronicles'” are “not horror tales with tired, swaying homunculi with screws in their necks and skulls, but icy investigations on the threshold of modernity in which the figures even indoors have the clouds of breath of winter at their mouths - or the breath of death. So it's no wonder that Sean Bean almost never takes off his formidable felt hat: that's the only way he's protected. "

At goldenekamera.de they found words of praise and said: “Anyone who wants to experience the unadorned dark side of Victorian England cannot ignore this brilliantly played mini-series! A cleverly constructed detective story unfolds in front of the breathtakingly furnished nightmare backdrop of the London underworld, illuminated exclusively with natural light sources, in which poverty, crime, scientific progress and political intrigue collide. "

Gian-Philip Andreas from TV Wishlist wrote: In the first season it is “not yet very clear [which elements should be in the foreground], the police-technical murder search [...], the historical image of a blatantly divided society on the eve of modernity or the mystery -Aspect. What has worked well so far is the atmospheric control: the horror of the grave robbers, the melancholy of the protagonists and the panic of conspiracy are in perfect balance. Even moments of shock and shock are played effectively. What, on the other hand, has not yet been so completely convincing is the crime drama. The investigative work has so far been rather confused, random and constructed. The sudden finding of obscure clues in artfully wrinkled old book pages fits more into adventure purrs like 'The Librarians' than into what the 'Frankenstein Chronicles' seem atmospherically intended. "
