There is a conflict between Protestant and Catholic advocates in Northern Ireland in the 1990s. A bomb on a bridge stirs up the population. For teenagers Erin, Orla, Michelle, Clare and James, however, there are much more important things, namely their own puberty. Erin and Orla are cousins and live together with Erin's mother Mary, Aunt Sarah (Mary's sister, Orla's mother and thus Erin's aunt), Erin's father Gerry and Grandpa Joe under one roof. On the first day of the new school year, Michelle introduces her friends Erin, Clare and Orla to her cousin James. Michelle's aunt left Derry about 16 years ago for an abortion in England. She never had this done, but stayed there before returning to Derry 16 years later with her son James. At first, James is very afraid that he would be bullied all the time in boys' school because of his English accent. As a result, he becomes the first male student at the Derry Catholic Girls' School.

On the bus to school, Michelle threatens a seventh grader, which is why she, her friends, and James are confronted by prefect Jenny Joyce. When Michelle refuses to apologize to the seventh grader, Jenny reports the incident to the nun Sister Michael, who is also the headmaster of the girls' school. She throws the group into detention, causing Erin to miss the performance of her crush David’s band. The 97-year-old nun who supervises the detention dies meanwhile.

After the friends have "studied" all night for their exams, they see a lonely dog running through the streets on the way to school. This looks like Erin's dog Toto, who was run over by a car some time ago. The dog runs away from the teenagers, but they follow him into a church, where they suddenly stand in front of a statue of the Virgin Mary. Completely sleepy and under the influence of residual alcohol everyone imagines that the statue is smiling at them. The dog suddenly barks, which only seems to interest Erin, which is why she follows the dog to the second floor of the church. He stands over the statue of Mary and urinates on it. For the teenagers remaining in front of the statue, it looks like Maria is crying. The group decides to describe their "supernatural" experiences to Sister Michael in order not to have to take the exams. Erin hides the truth, not least because the attractive priest Peter is interested in the story and is supposed to stand by the group. The pastor believes that the dog Toto was resurrected and showed the teenagers the way to church. The box in which Toto is lying is supposed to be dug up as evidence, which makes Erin very nervous because his carcass must still be in the box. But the box is empty, which amazes Erin very much. She confronts her mother with this fact, who then admits to having given Toto to the neighbor Maureen Malarkey. Angry about it, Erin tells her friends the truth about the weeping statue of Mary, but the group decides to keep up the lies. Peter reveals to Erin that his faith and celibacy are being tested and that he has considered disappearing with a woman he loves. But the story of the teenagers had strengthened his belief. Erin believes that she is the mistress and confesses to him that the story of the statue of Mary was made up. Peter makes it clear to her that she is not the woman he loves, which Erin very disappoints. Now that the story has been exposed as a lie, the teenagers are branded liars and still have to take the exams.

Trivia

  • At the beginning of the first episode you can see young people spraying a street sign with the words "Welcome to Londonderry" with black paint, so that only "Welcome to Derry" can be read from it. Property damage of this kind is indeed common. This is due to a name dispute between Irish nationalists and the Unionists . While the unionists prefer the official name "Londonderry", the nationalists only accept "Derry".
  • Nicola Coughlan was already 30 when she took on the role of teenage Clare Devlin.
  • During the filming of the fifth episode, which staged an Orange Walk, there were occasional incidents where angry residents threw objects at the parade. This happened even though it was indicated in advance that it was filming.
  • In January 2019 a huge painting depicting the five main characters was painted on the wall of a bar in the center of Derry.
