Hornblower is a British eight-part miniseries with Ioan Gruffudd in the title role in the adventures of the young naval officer Horatio Hornblower during the Napoleonic Wars are presented. It is based on three of the ten novels created by Cecil Scott Forester about the fictional sea hero Hornblower.
action
Ensign Hornblower, who was initially inexperienced, was able to show his courage in several skirmishes after initial harassment by his older comrades under the command of Captain Pellew . During a command as a prize officer, he was temporarily imprisoned. As a lieutenant, Hornblower is the fifth and youngest officer on the ship of the line HMS Renown , which is commanded by a brutal and paranoid captain. There he met his future friend Bush, who was the third officer and thus his superior. After a successful commando operation in the Caribbean, Hornblower is promoted to Commander . Shortly after he was given his own command, however, the Amiens peace was signed. Hornblower and Bush are given temporary retirement with halved pay . After the brief peace, Hornblower is reactivated and appointed commander of a sloop .
production
Captain Pellew's HMS Indefatigable is portrayed by the modern ship replica Étoile du Roy . For Hornblower's HMS Hotspur , the Earl of Pembroke , actually a replica of a civilian ship, had to accept some modifications. Since sailable ships of the line from that era no longer exist, large-scale, remote-controlled models of up to seven meters in length were used to depict larger battles. Scenes on gun decks were initially filmed in a true-to-original setting, and later even on board Lord Nelson's HMS Victory . Outdoor shots were shot in the Black Sea , the Livadia Palace in Crimea, Portugal, the Royal William Yard and the historic Plymouth harbor district. The series was supposed to include Forrester's other novels through to Hornblower's acts as an admiral, but ITV ultimately shied away from the cost of the lavish production despite good ratings. Main actor Gruffudd tried for some time to produce the following episodes on his own responsibility, but was unsuccessful.
