The Étoile de Roy , formerly Grand Turk , is a replica of a three-masted English 6th class frigate from the 18th century, better known as the HMS Indefatigable from the television series Hornblower . The historical Indefatigable , however, was a significantly larger ship. In the same television series, the Étoile de Roy appeared as the French ship Papillon . It was built primarily for the international film and television industry.

Today the tall ship is mainly used for tall ship parades, for charter by companies or private individuals, and for social events in the spacious salon or on deck. On June 28, 2005 she represented the HMS Victory , Nelson's flagship , at the International Fleet Review off Portsmouth (GB) on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar .

Ship dimensions

The Étoile de Roy is 46.3 meters long and 10.4 meters wide. Her main mast is 35.66 meters high and its draft is 3.1 meters. It has two diesel engines with 450 HP (340 kW) each and a permanent crew of 16 men.

Rigging

The Étoile de Roy is rigged as a full ship and carries twelve sails. The foremast and the mainmast each carry three square sails . The mizzen mast carries a square sail and a gaff sail underneath . The bowsprit carries two jibs . A figurehead adorns the bow .

Shipyard and construction

The Étoile de Roy was built in 1996 in Marmaris , Turkey; the cost of manufacture was two million pounds sterling. It is an authentic replica based on historical drawings of the frigate HMS Blandford from 1741 . On deck she carries smooth-barreled cast iron cannons .

In the 18th century, frigates were not big enough or heavily armed to fight in the keel line . Their job was mainly to act as a scout for the fleet, to support them if necessary or to deliver messages.

In March 2010 the ship was renamed from Grand Turk to Étoile du Roy and is operated by the charter company Étoile Marine Croisières.
