C. S. Forester (* 27. August 1899 in Cairo , Egypt as Cecil Lewis Troughton Smith ; † 2. April 1966 in Fullerton , California ) was a British writer and journalist .

Life

His father, a British junior official in the Egyptian Ministry of Education , had him raised in England. He broke off the subsequent medical studies and began his writing career in 1921 under the pseudonym Cecil Scott Forester . He wrote war, sea and adventure novels as well as travelogues.

Forester worked as a correspondent for the Times in London , during the Spanish Civil War in Spain , and in Prague . Since 1932 the writer has also worked repeatedly as a screenwriter for Hollywood . The films based on his works include a. African Queen and King's Admiral .

During World War II, Forester worked for the Department of Information in Washington, DC

As a writer, he achieved an overwhelming success in 1937 with Der Kapitän ( The Happy Return ), where he introduced his sea hero Horatio Hornblower . Here and in Hornblower's subsequent adventures in An Spaniensüsten ( A Ship of the Line , 1938) and Under Waving Flag ( Flying Colors , 1938), he revived the great days of the British Navy. Eleven Hornblower novels had appeared by 1962.

Forester died on April 2, 1966 without having finished his last Hornblower novel.

reception

The King's Admiral is the film adaptation of three books from Forester's multi-volume cycle about the ( fictional ) sea hero Horatio Hornblower and his career at the time of the Napoleonic Wars . With the lively and captivating descriptions of life on board British warships from 1794 to 1823, Forester founded the "naval historical novel", a genre that was popular especially in England.

Forester was one of the most widely read authors of the 1950s and 1960s. His novels reached millions of copies.

The "CS Forester Society", founded in Great Britain, preserves the memory of Forester worldwide.
