Jeffrey Hunter (1960)

Jeffrey Hunter (born November 25, 1926 in New Orleans , † May 27, 1969 in Los Angeles , actually Henry Herman McKinnies, Jr. ) was an American actor .

Life

Hunter grew up in Milwaukee , where he played in one of the local theaters as a teenager . He served in the Navy during World War II , and later studied at Northwestern University near Chicago . In 1950 he was offered a two-year contract with 20th Century Fox studio . His feature film debut was in 1950 in the film Julius Caesar .

In 1953, Hunter peripherally took part in the entertainment program This Is Your Life in order to deliberately lure the main guest, Hanna Kohner , into the studio.

One of his bemerkenswertesten roles played Hunter in 1956 as Martin Pawley in John Ford Western The Searchers at the side of John Wayne . He received excellent reviews for the portrayal and was involved in a novelty in film history: For the first time, a film was advertised by a multi-part making-of broadcast on television , initiated by a television appearance by Hunter. He became better known, however, through his embodiment of Jesus Christ in Nicholas Ray's monumental film King of Kings .

Hunter was the first to cast the captain of the Starship Enterprise . However, he only played the character of Christopher Pike in 1964 in the pilot episode The Cage, which only aired on December 24, 1988 as part of a special . Because the concept of the series was too demanding for NBC , a new pilot film was commissioned.

Hunter decided in 1965 against it to play Captain Pike again and thus to tie himself to a television series; he also turned down a short guest appearance to build a bridge between the first pilot film and the new series. Hunter devoted himself instead to his film career, but could not build on his earlier successes. Engagements in cheap European westerns followed.

While the film ¡Viva América! in Spain in 1969 Hunter was injured in the face in an explosion. Later, while practicing martial arts with an old friend, a former British commando , he miserably banged the back of his head on a door. On the return flight to the United States, his right arm suddenly showed signs of paralysis and Hunter had speech impairment. He was admitted to a hospital in Los Angeles immediately after landing. Hunter initially recovered and was discharged after a few weeks. However, shortly after signing the contract to star in the film Desperados with Vince Edwards , Hunter suffered a cerebral hemorrhage when he slipped and fell on a staircase. It took some time to find him there.

Hunter died the following day, aged 42, during surgery to repair his fractured skull without regaining consciousness. He was married three times in total. His first wife (1950–1955) was the actress Barbara Rush , with whom he had a son. From the marriage (1957-1967) with Joan Bartlett two children were born.
