Ripper Street is a British crime series produced for the BBC and BBC America from 2012 to 2013 . The first installments in the series take place in Whitechapel in the East End of London in 1889, six months after the Jack the Ripper murders . The leading roles are played by Matthew Macfadyen , Jerome Flynn and Adam Rothenberg . It premiered in the UK on December 30, 2012 on BBC One . After provisional cancellation after the second season, Amazon UK announced the production of a third season for its streaming service Amazon Prime Instant Video in February 2014. In May 2015, Amazon UK commissioned two more seasons of the series. Amazon UK announced in March 2016 that Season 5 would be the last.

Whitechapel, London, 1889: Six months have passed since Jack the Ripper's last murder in London's East End. Now murders occur again in the signature of Jack the Ripper. Inspector Edmund Reid and his colleagues Sergeant Bennet Drake and Captain Homer Jackson form the H Division and do everything they can to solve the murders. They also want to restore law and order in London.

The television series Ripper Street is a joint production of the British BBC and the American cable broadcaster BBC America . Eight episodes were ordered for the first season. Almost all of the filming took place in Dublin , Ireland . Dublin Castle and Kilmainham Gaol were the setting for the East End of London .
After the broadcast of the fifth episode of the first season, the production of a second season with a further eight episodes was announced. Due to unsatisfactory viewership, the series was discontinued on December 4, 2013 by BBC One. Then the producers tried to sell the series to the streaming service Lovefilm . In February 2014, more episodes were ordered from the video-on-demand provider belonging to Amazon .

The first season aired on December 30, 2012 on BBC One. The pilot episode saw 7.89 million viewers. In the weeks that followed, the ratings dropped only minimally. The first season finale took place on February 24, 2013. The second season ran between October 28 and December 16, 2013. Since the television series was against I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here! , the UK version of I'm a Celebrity - Get Me Out of Here! , had to compete, the audience numbers dropped to just under four million, which is why BBC One canceled the series.

In Germany, the TV series was first on the Pay TV transmitter RTL Crime shown. There the first season ran between August 30 and October 18, 2013, the second season was from September 5, 2014 and the third season from July 14, 2015.
The series was broadcast on free TV between February 17 and April 7, 2014 on ZDFneo . At the same time, it ran late in the evening on the ZDF main program until April 11, 2014 .
