David Matthew Macfadyen (born October 17, 1974 in Great Yarmouth , England ) is a British actor .

Life and accomplishments

From 1992 to 1995 Macfadyen studied at the renowned Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts . He became famous for his role as MI5 agent Tom Quinn in the BBC series Spooks . In 2004, in the third season, Macfadyen stepped out of the award-winning series and devoted himself to his film career.

In 2004 Macfadyen took on a role in the New Zealand film When the Sea Disappeared , directed by Brad McGanns , for which he received the New Zealand Film Award for Best Actor and was nominated for the British Independent Film Award in July 2005 . Macfadyen played the role of Mr. Darcy in Joe Wright's romantic drama Pride and Prejudice, based on the novel by Jane Austen . The film, starring Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet , was released in 2005 and earned the actor the Character and Morality in Entertainment Award and a nomination for the London Critics Circle Film Award .

Macfadyen received a Royal Television Society Award for Best Actor on March 19, 2008 for his role in the television drama Secret Life . Also for this role he was nominated for a BAFTA Award , which was presented on April 20, 2008.

In 2008 the films Incendiary and Frost / Nixon were released. Macfadyen plays a leading role in it, alongside well-known actors such as Ewan McGregor and Michelle Williams or Frank Langella and Kevin Bacon . He also had roles in the television production Miss Marple: A Pocket Full of Rye and the Charles Dickens film adaptation Little Dorrit . He appeared in a guest role in the BBC production Ashes to Ashes - Back to the 80s a . a. at the side of his wife Keeley Hawes in episode 7 of season 1 ("The Man With the Child in His Eyes") .

He also made the films Enid and Criminal Justice for British television in 2009 , as well as the Robin Hood film adaptation of Ridley Scott with Russell Crowe in the title role. On June 6, 2010, Macfadyen received a BAFTA Award for his portrayal of Joe Miller in Criminal Justice for Best Supporting Actor. In the international television production The Pillars of the Earth based on the bestseller by Ken Follett , he played the central figure of Prior Philip. In addition, in the summer of 2010 they filmed the biographically inspired book by William Boyd "A Human Heart" with Macfadyen as one of three incarnations of the protagonist Logan Mountstuart . In 2010, Macfadyen was in Germany for the 3D remake of the Three Musketeers by Paul WS Anderson in front of the camera, in which he played the role of Athos.

From May to August 2005 Macfadyen starred alongside Michael Gambon as Henry, Prince of Wales, in Shakespeare's historical drama Henry IV at the National Theater in London . In February 2010 Macfadyen appeared at the Theater Royal Bath and then for five weeks at the Vaudeville Theater in London on the side of Kim Cattrall in the comedy Private Lives by Noël Coward .

In addition to his acting activities, Macfadyen works as a spokesperson for audio books, television documentaries and computer games.

Macfadyen has been married to British actress Keeley Hawes since October 2004 , with whom he has two children.
