The Three Musketeers (original title: The Three Musketeers ) is an adventure film in 3D from the year 2011 by director Paul WS Anderson . The film is loosely based on the novel The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas the Elder .

Young D'Artagnan, who was trained in fencing by his father, a former musketeer, wants to join the royal musketeers . On the trip to Paris he met his future archenemy: Rochefort, the leader of Cardinal Richelieu's troops . When he arrives in Paris, he clashes with three musketeers for various reasons, whereupon he agrees to meet everybody for a duel every hour. When the three musketeers, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, appear for the first duel (Athos has chosen Porthos and Aramis as his seconds ), they notice that they are all dealing with the same opponent. Before there can be a fight, however, the cardinal's troops appear and want to arrest all four. D'Artagnan, who immediately rushed into battle, defeated the troops almost single-handedly.
Because of the defeat of his guard, Cardinal Richelieu, the actual ruler of France, causes the young King Louis to call the musketeers to him for a punishment. Instead of punishing them, however, D'Artagnan takes on the musketeers and rewards all four because he is impressed by their fighting spirit.
The spy Milady De Winter, who a year ago betrayed the three musketeers to the Duke of Buckingham and stole the plans for an airship from them, changes sides again. Now she is working with the cardinal on Buckingham declaring war on France so that the cardinal can officially take power over France. To this end, she steals Queen Anna's jewels and slips them on the Duke of Buckingham to make King Louis believe that his wife is having an affair with Buckingham.
Constance, a maid of the young queen with whom D'Artagnan fell in love, gave the musketeers the task of bringing the jewels back from London. Milady De Winter is already waiting for her there, but is unable to thwart her plan. When Athos tries to judge Milady for her crimes, she throws herself into the sea. But on the return trip in Buckingham's airship, the Rochefort musketeers are intercepted on a much larger airship. In addition, Constance is in the hands of Rochefort.
Inevitably, the Musketeers agree to an exchange: D'Artagnan and the jewels for Constance. Then an air battle begins, which ends with D'Artagnan and Rochefort landing with his destroyed airship on the Cathedral of Notre Dame .
On the roof of Notre Dame, D'Artagnan and Rochefort fight a long duel, from which D'Artagnan finally emerges victorious. When the musketeers take on the king and cardinal, they do not reveal Richelieu's intrigues, otherwise order in France would collapse. But they turn down his offer to work for him.
The humiliated Duke of Buckingham seeks revenge and has set up a huge fleet with which he is now moving against France. He can also save Milady De Winter from drowning.

The film received mostly negative reviews, earning a 24% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 90 reviews. At Metacritic one could Metascore of 35, 15 reviews, achieved based.

Trivia
The end credits of the film begin with "For Bernd". This refers to the German film producer Bernd Eichinger , who died on January 24, 2011. His daughter Nina Eichinger plays a lady-in-waiting to Queen Anna.
