Star Force Soldier ( Soldier ) is a science fiction film by Paul WS Anderson from the year 1998 . The main role was played by Kurt Russell . The film opened in German cinemas on June 10, 1999.

action

Since 1996, a group of children has been ruthlessly raised to be soldiers. Among the children is Todd, who is undergoing intensive training. In 2036 he has already had numerous battles. After a few tests, the commanders come to the conclusion that new genetically modified soldiers are more suitable. Two members of Todd's group are killed during a practice fight against the newcomers.

Todd himself survives badly injured, but is also believed to be dead and taken to the garbage disposal planet Arcadia in a garbage space transporter. After an emergency landing, a group of settlers has lived there since 2024, taking in Todd and nursing him back to health. Due to his military training, Todd initially had difficulty adapting. His closed-off manner arouses the suspicion of the settlers, and after an incident in which he allegedly puts a child in danger, the settlers vote that Todd must leave the community. Later one of the settlers goes to get Todd back. But an arriving spaceship discovers the two and shoots without warning, the settler dies.

The military with the new gene soldiers is coming to install autarkic surveillance systems on Arcadia. The settlers who did not land are discovered, classified as enemies and used as training material for the gene soldiers. Todd takes sides with the settlers and kills the genetically engineered soldiers. The commander panics and orders to retreat, but before that, a strong nuclear charge is installed on Arcadia that is supposed to blow up the entire planet. Todd, his former comrades and the surviving settlers take over the ship and can escape the nuclear explosion of the planet. Colonel Mekum and the other officers are abandoned on Arcadia, where they fail to disarm the cargo in time.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that every now and then it would be nice to see a movie that didn't show a post-apocalyptic vision. This film also belongs to this subgenre. Nothing in the film is original. Berardinelli praised the performances by Sean Pertwee, Connie Nielsen, Jason Scott Lee and Jason Isaacs. He compared Kurt Russell's play negatively with Russell's portrayal of Snake Plissken in The Rattlesnake and Escape from LA

Peter Stack wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle on October 23, 1998 that the film was "simple" - 85 minutes in which the hero battles the villain.

The lexicon of international films saw a "brutal science fiction film that wants to deal with the incarnation of an emotional orphan, but which turns into an unbroken hymn to militarism and war through excessive fighting scenes and its ideology of a defensive existence."

background

Production costs were approximately 75 million US dollars . The film grossed $ 14.57 million in US cinemas.

Kurt Russell was paid $ 20 million for the role. Since his role was rather wordless, he used 104 words in the entire film, which makes an impressive 192,307 dollars / word.

Star Force Soldier is set in the same fictional world as Blade Runner , according to director Paul WS Anderson and screenwriter David Peoples . Peoples, who co-wrote the Blade Runner script, built some references to it in the script. Thus, for example, in a scene Battle of the Tannhauser Gate ( Battle of Tannhauser Gate ) and the shoulder of Orion ( Shoulder of Orion ) listed as combat missions Todd; these are listed towards the end of Blade Runner by the replicant Roy Batty as missions in which Batty participated.

Another reference to another film is a Todd award named Plissken Patch , which can be seen in the same scene. This refers to the film The Rattlesnake from 1981, in which Kurt Russell played the main character named Snake Plissken .

Frames

Until the release of the Blu-ray in March 2019 (approved for ages 18+ after re-examination by the FSK), there was no unabridged German version of the film. In addition to an FSK-16 version shortened by approx. 6 minutes, there was also an FSK-18 version until then, which was also shortened by approx. 50 seconds. Only the FSK-16 version was shown in the cinema. Both versions were shown on TV and were also released on DVD.
