Resident Evil: Retribution is the fifth installment in the real-life series Resident Evil , which is based on the video game series of the same name .

Like its predecessor, the film was shot entirely in 3D .

action

The film begins with a rewound attack on the cargo ship that was saved by Alice in the last part. You can see Jill Valentine apparently fighting on Umbrella's side against the ship's crew and Alice. After a heavy hit, Alice ends up in the water. Some time later she wakes up with long blonde hair instead of short dark hair, apparently well protected in a house where she looks after her husband Carlos Olivera and her deaf daughter. However, the calm is soon disturbed by zombies who invade the house and infect her husband. Alice can just escape the window with her daughter Becky, and the viewer sees that the city (Raccoon City according to the inscription on a news helicopter) is currently being attacked by zombies. When trying to escape with a friend of his neighbors who looks like her companion Rain Ocampo from the first part of the film series, an accident occurs in which Alice and Becky are just able to escape into their house from a horde of approaching zombies. With the threat of Becky being discovered, Alice apparently sacrifices herself to give her the opportunity to hide by fighting a zombie. Although he falls down a banister, she is killed by her infected husband.

Then the real Alice is, however, naked and covered only by two sheets, in an Umbrella prison and is questioned by Jill. When she doesn't answer or starts to ask counter-questions, she is tortured by high-pitched sounds. Some time later, the security system fails, all the prison doors open and a drawer with clothes comes out of the wall. Alice now flees fully clothed and apparently arrives at an initially deserted Tokyo via an opening portal , in which, however, passers-by are faded in after a while. The scene is very similar to the beginning of the previous film, when an infected woman bites a man in the street and the observers flee screaming. The zombie virus breaks out and Alice escapes through another portal back into the umbrella system. This is not yet completely under control of Jill, so that she meets Ada Wong and her adversary Albert Wesker, who is connected via video link, who previously caused the system crash. They explain to Alice that she is in a gigantic submarine bunker of the former Soviet Union , which lies under a layer of ice and has been converted by Umbrella into a "test center".

The Tokyo Alice saw was just a replica for the purpose of demonstrating bio-weapons to potential Umbrella customers. For this reason, Umbrella has cloned the population of the test facilities in Moscow , Manhattan , Tokyo and Berlin from 50 “basic models” . Now the viewer notices that the people who were seen in the suburban scene, including Alice, Carlos and Rain, were just clones. Furthermore, Wesker reports that he has deposited a task force under the leadership of Leon S. Kennedy on the surface of the submarine bunker with the task of rescuing Alice and bringing her to him because she would be "needed". Part of this team is Luther West, who fought his way to freedom alone in the previous film. In addition, the viewer learns that the Umbrella troops are now commanded by the Red Queen computer , the programming of which provides for the T-Virus to be deprived of its nourishment and therefore to destroy all life. Alice initially agrees to an alliance and goes with Ada on the way through the various test systems to the elevator on the other side of the system.

Meanwhile, Wesker's team opens the bunker's huge ventilation pipes and lays explosive charges. Meanwhile, Alice and Ada meet the cloned Becky in the Raccoon City facility, whom Alice takes to be her mother due to the optical similarity, but are attacked by Jill and the newly cloned team from the first film, including Carlos and Rain. Alice and Becky escape, while Ada stays behind and continues to fight. Meanwhile, Wesker's team arrives at the Moscow facility. However, they are attacked by Las Plagas zombies, which are faster and more intelligent than normal zombies. After several losses, they can flee from the zombies, but only to meet a very large BOW (Bio Organic Weapon, a mutant bred as a weapon). This kills the team's navigator. At that moment Alice comes to the aid of the decimated team with a car. When Alice tries to get back to Becky despite the advice of the group, who Alice left behind at a subway station when the suburban Rain resurfaced, they continue to be pursued and attacked by the Las Plagas zombies, as well as by the BOW. Alice manages to drive through a subway shaft, which then collapses and buries the BOW under itself. Then she picks up Becky and Rain. The group is now trying to escape to freedom with the help of Ada's AR glasses, which provide an overview of the entire facility. When they reach the elevator shortly before the time runs out - the previously installed bombs are equipped with a timer - the cloned Rain is killed and Becky is kidnapped by the BOW. Although her companions want to prevent her from advocating a clone, Alice sets out to save Becky. At that moment the group is attacked again by Jill. Barry Burton is killed while trying to back up the others.

Meanwhile Alice can defeat the BOW and save Becky from a cocoon . On the way back to the elevator, the two come through a hall in which there are hundreds of unprogrammed clone bodies, including those from Alice, which irritates Becky. Shortly afterwards the time bombs explode. However, Alice and Becky arrive on the elevator platform in time, where the rest of the group is. Once at the top, the group makes their way to the extraction point. However, they are stopped by an Umbrellas submarine breaking through the ice, and it is revealed that Jill and Rain captured Ada. A fight ensues, with Alice fighting Jill and Leon and Luther West fighting Rain, who has deliberately become infected with the Las Plagas parasites that make her invulnerable. Rain kills Luther West with a targeted blow to his heart in battle. Alice is able to free Jill from her spider-shaped mind control device, the Red Queen , after a long fight . However, she doesn't manage to hold out against Rain and seems to lose. Shortly before the final blow, however, she sees a zombie under the ice, and the reawakened Jill throws her a gun. With this Alice shoots a hole in the ice, through which the zombies pull Rain under water. Before she finally goes down, Rain announces that she will return and get Alice. Alice, Becky, Jill, Ada and Leon, the only survivors of the task force, are now being brought by helicopter to the half-destroyed White House in Washington, DC , where Wesker has now taken up quarters. A heavy struggle can be seen in the background. When Alice meets Wesker in the Oval Office , he painfully infects her with the T-Virus, from which he had cured her in the previous film, in order to restore her old strength as the only positive example of the T-Virus so far. Wesker then explains to her that she is the last secret weapon against the Red Queen . In conclusion, he describes the upcoming battle as the “last battle of mankind”. In the final scene you can see the White House being besieged by BOWs and zombies and the army desperately trying to defend it.

production

Davis Films / Impact Pictures (RE5) and Constantin Film were involved as production companies in the project, which was completed under the working title Resident Evil: 5 .

Influences

A parasitic organism called Las Plagas was built into the film from Resident Evil 4 , so that the undead can run, ride motorcycles and operate submachine guns. Paul WS Anderson also wanted to incorporate an action scene from the game Resident Evil 5 , in which a Hummer is driven. But instead he opted for a Rolls-Royce Phantom .

Aside from the video game series, Anderson was also inspired by science fiction films : “ I think Inception had a huge impact on everyone and I think Westworld is an important film to Paul. Everybody knows, because he talks about it enough, the Alien series , Blade Runner , all these things are inspirations. ”( Bolt )

To make the make-up as realistic as possible, make-up effects supervisor Paul Jones took a look at Zombie 2 and got further inspiration from it.

For the fight scenes that are shown in the film, the director Anderson took inspiration from the film Last Samurai and Thai films, in order to make broken bones and pain through the actors better.

music

The film composers Tomandandy , who created the music for Resident Evil: Afterlife , are now also responsible for the music for this film. The director states that the film's music has evolved over that of its predecessor, Afterlife . One of the aims was to merge electronic music with orchestral sounds. The official soundtrack was released on September 11, 2012 by Milan Records , which includes Tomandandy's work. The end credits song, Hexes , was produced by DJ Bassnectar with the voice of Chino Moreno ( Deftones ). Actress Mika Nakashima sang the song for the Japanese version.

Filming

The shooting began on October 10 and ended on December 23, 2011. The recordings for Resident Evil Retribution emerged among others in the Cinespace Film Studios in Toronto , Times Square in New York City and in Moscow on the Red Square . Resident Evil: Retribution is the second film in the series to be shot in 3D . The first was Resident Evil: Afterlife .

On October 11, 2011, 16 people were injured on the set of the film when a platform collapsed. Ten injured were taken to hospital in Toronto by police and had to receive emergency care. The injured suffered bruises and broken bones. Since those to be treated were disguised like zombies and smeared with fake blood, the hospital staff had difficulty treating the actual injuries.

The streets on Red Square were closed for one day for filming. After all the recordings were in the can, the Moscow Metro was blocked for further recordings for five hours. Most of the streets in Red Square were also recreated in a studio. The car chase began in Moscow in November.

Kevin Durand and Shawn Roberts were involved in filming from the first week of December and Li Bingbing from December 14th. A Jill and Alice fight scene that included over 200 combinations was filmed from December 14th until production ended.
