Resident Evil ( dt. About resident evil ) is the title of a published in 1996, the video game of Capcom . In Japan the game was published under the title Biohazard ( Japanese バ イ オ ハ ザ ー ド , trans. Baiohazādo ). It belongs to the survival horror genre and is the eponym for the franchise of the same name .
action
Resident Evil is set in an old mansion, the Spencer Mansion , in the fictional Raccoon Forest . The forest is near the small town of Raccoon City , which is the main employer of a mysterious pharmaceutical company called Umbrella Corporation . In addition to legal research, the company conducts bioweapons research and genetic manipulation under the name White Umbrella , with the aim of creating a super warrior. To do this, unscrupulous researchers created the so-called Tyrant virus (T virus) , a pathogen created from the progenitor virus, which mutates its host after a short time and only follows one basic instinct: eating. By accelerating decomposition, the virus causes a deformity of the victim, which however does not prevent the sick person from continuing to live. He becomes a living dead . As the ultimate test, the workforce of the mansion and the laboratory located in it are unknowingly infected and the battle-hardened STARS (Special Tactics And Rescue Service) team is sent off to allegedly solve strange murders to test the true strength of the T-Virus by bribing the police chief .
In their search for food, the infected, including laboratory animals, break out and hunt unsuspecting hikers in the surrounding Raccoon Forest . After some mutilated corpses have been found, the Bravo team of the STARS special command is dispatched to investigate the situation. But there is an accident: your helicopter crashes and the Alpha Team has to go to the rescue. Either way, the player slips into the shoes of Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield to solve the disappearance of the Bravo team and the mysterious deaths in the Raccoon Forest . Eight different endings are possible, which encourages repeated play through.
Pawns
Playable figures
- Jill Valentine: She's on the STARS Alpha Team (Special Tactics And Rescue Service / Squad) and the mechanic on the team. She is also good at handling some electronic devices such as the radio and can pick locks.
- Chris Redfield: Like Jill, he is also on the Alpha Team and occupies the position of sniper, so he is proficient with many weapons.
- Rebecca Chambers: If you choose Chris as a character, you can play with her for a while. The doctor and paramedic on the Bravo team is a newcomer to STARS. She has outstanding knowledge of biology and chemistry.
Minor characters
- Barry Burton: The weapons specialist and Chris' former comrade in the army is in charge of security. Instead of the Samurai Edge (STARS deployment pistol), he prefers to rely on his 44 Magnum. During the course of the game he often meets Jill to save her from a sticky situation or to discuss the state of the situation with her.
- Albert Wesker: Is the alpha team's mission leader. Although he managed to escape to the mansion with Chris, Jill and Barry, he disappears without a trace at the beginning of the game, only to reveal his true intentions towards the end.
- Kenneth J. Sullivan: Shortly after Chris, Jill, Barry and Albert are at the mansion, they hear gunshots from a gun. As it turns out, it was Kenneth (Scout Position, Bravo Team) who tried to fend off a zombie. Unfortunately unsuccessful. Any help comes too late for him.
- Forest Speyer: Bravo team vehicle specialist and responsible for inspecting the equipment. Was friends with Chris and Jill even before they joined the STARS. He is attacked and killed by crows on a balcony.
- Richard Aiken: He's one of the few comrades on the Bravo team who is found alive. He's badly injured and poisoned, so he really needs an antiserum, which Jill gets for him. Chris finds him, who was charged with ensuring the security, lifeless.
In the Original / Director's Cut the serum doesn't help him, he dies right after the injection. The serum works in the remake / HD remake. He is recovering, but when a comrade got stuck, he sacrificed himself for him.
- Enrico Marini: Albert Wesker's deputy and head of the Bravo team. In his research, he finds out that there must be a traitor on the team and initially suspects Chris as the one. He is shot when he tries to tell his colleagues.
- Joseph Frost: He was in charge of maintaining the guns and his distinctive feature was a red headband that he never took off. His belligerent character was his undoing: While searching for the Bravo team, Joseph was attacked and killed by several Cerberi.
- Brad Vickers: Is the pilot of the Alpha team. Since he doesn't like to get himself into dangerous situations, his comrades nicknamed him "Rabbit's Foot". When Joseph is attacked by the Cerberi, Brad panics, takes the helicopter and leaves his comrades in the lurch. Possibly he was plagued by remorse because he contacted his colleagues in order to fly back and rescue the survivors. He is not seen as a character in the whole game. All you can hear is his voice on the radio.
- Edward Dewey: He is neither mentioned nor shown as a person in the Original / Director's Cut. Listed as a pilot only in the instructions. He has a minor role in Resident Evil Zero.
- Kevin Dooley: A Raccoon City Police Force pilot. Kevin was not a member of the STARS, but at the direction of his supervisor, he took part in the Bravo team. Thanks to a secret assignment from Dewey, he filled the position of the pilot in charge. He dies in an attack by a Cerberus and is found lifeless by the alpha team. This character only appears in the remake / HD remake.
Game principle and technology
The main goal of Resident Evil is to escape the mansion alive and, depending on whether you play Chris or Jill, to find the allies and, if necessary, to rescue them. In the game, you have to solve puzzles, find a wide variety of objects and use them correctly and carefully.
Several weapons are available to the player in the course of the game:
- Pistol, shotgun (s), revolver, rocket and grenade launchers with high explosive, incendiary or acid grenades. In the 2002 GameCube reissue, there was also a self-defense pistol and flamethrower. The flamethrower is also available in Resident Evil: Deadly Silence (Nintendo DS) rebirth mode.
- Self-defense weapons: dagger and stun gun (Jill) or stun grenades (Chris)
You can only save the current score by finding the colored ribbons distributed throughout the house and the surrounding area and inserting them into a typewriter. Therefore there are only limited storage options available to a player. There are no automatic save points or the possibility of a " Continue ". If the character dies, you have to start over from the last saved point.
If you meet certain requirements in the game, you can also unlock the following levels of difficulty: hard, "invisible opponents" and "real survival".
Production notes
Commercially, this game was one of the most successful of the PlayStation era, kicking off an avalanche of survival horror games. Including, for example, Silent Hill or Parasite Eve .
Director's Cut
In 1997, a Director's Cut of the game was released, which includes three different versions on the same CD; the original version from 1996, a version of the original with an easier level of difficulty and the actual Director's Cut. This differs from the normal version in that it has an almost uncut introduction ("intro") in color. The characters have each received a new bonus costume that they wear from the beginning of the game. The special key for unlocking the changing room, which you had to unlock in the original version, is no longer available in the Director's Cut, as you now enter the room from the beginning and between the original costume, the bonus costume of the original version and the bonus costume of the Director's Cut Version can choose.
The opponents are now stronger, they are often also in other places, or their number has increased. In addition, many items can now be found in different places, and the camera settings have also changed in many places. Nothing has changed in the story itself, the end sequences have also remained the same, with the difference that these are now also uncut.
Remake for Nintendo consoles
Resident Evil was reissued by Capcom in 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube and adapted to its graphic capabilities. The content has also been changed a lot, which is particularly noticeable in the level design. The storyline of the game remained basically unchanged. Pre-calculated backgrounds are still used, with a comparatively high level of detail at the time. The graphics achieve almost photorealism in some game sections. Explicit novelties were Trevor's missing letters, the Kenneth Sullivan video tape, an additional and recurring opponent named Lisa Trevor , running and angry zombies (the so-called Crimson Heads , which got their name because of the scarlet color of their heads), melee weapons like stun grenades or daggers, petrol cans and lighter to burn zombies, new areas (including a cemetery), new costumes, new puzzles and differently distributed objects. Another route and 12 ends are added.
In 2008, Capcom released the port of this version as Resident Evil Remake for Nintendo Wii in Japan . In the USA and Europe this was published in 2009 under the title Resident Evil Archives .
Resident Evil: Deadly Silence
In Deadly Silence is a realization of the first part for Nintendo DS . This game has been adapted to the possibilities of the handheld and expanded by some modes. In Japan, the game was released on January 19, 2006 under the name Biohazard DS .
In single player mode, the game offers two modes. The "Classic Mode" was adopted almost 1: 1 from the PlayStation original. The "Rebirth Mode", however, uses the touchscreen of the Nintendo DS and offers new game content. So you have to solve puzzles with the help of the touch screen and even the microphone, or you have to swing the knife from the first person perspective with the help of the pen and defend yourself against zombies, dogs and hunter mutants.
In the newly integrated "Master of Knifing" mode you have to fight your way through five levels full of monsters, whereby you cannot move the player character yourself, but switch from one room to the next after defeating all enemies. In addition, the game is more "action-heavy" than in "Classic Mode", there are more opponents, but also more remedies and ammunition.
The multiplayer mode is also new. Up to four players can play against each other or with each other via the wireless function of the DS. Nine figures can be selected, but seven of them must be unlocked. There are three levels (Mansion, Guardhouse and Laboratory) and the goal is to get from start to finish within a given time.
Resident Evil HD Remaster
On August 5th, 2014, a new edition of the game for PlayStation 3 , PlayStation 4 , Xbox 360 , Xbox One and Windows was announced, based on the GameCube version from 2002. In addition to improved textures and 1080p support, it is said to have a revised sound and new possibilities for the controller input and updated aspect ratios (16: 9). It was released in Europe and North America on January 20, 2015 and by April 2015 had sold over a million copies worldwide.
