Resident Evil 2 ( Jap. バイオハザード2 , trans. Baiohazādo 2 , Biohazard 2) is a 1998 published computer game from Capcom . The title can be assigned to the survival horror genre and, as a continuation of the successful Resident Evil, laid the foundation for the expansion of the series .

Publications

Resident Evil 2 was released in the US on January 21, 1998, the Japanese version followed on January 29, and Europe on May 8 of the same year. Initially published for Sony's PlayStation, this was followed by implementations for Nintendo 64 , Sega Dreamcast , Nintendo GameCube , PC and the handheld Game.com from Tiger Electronics . Resident Evil 2 was indexed in Germany on May 30, 1998 by what was then the Federal Testing Office for writings harmful to minors . Capcom then brought some censored versions onto the market, but they were also indexed. In March 2014, the game was prematurely removed from the index. After a re-examination by the USK, the game was released uncut from the age of 16.

action

Two months after the incident in the mansion, the Umbrella Corporation sends out its own special unit to steal the G-Virus newly developed by William Birkin . Shortly after the failed operation, the virus spreads across Raccoon City . After Chris Redfield , a main character of the first part, disappears without a trace shortly after his assignment in the mansion, his sister Claire Redfield sets out to Raccoon City to look for her brother there. At this point she does not yet know that the residents there have already mutated into bloodthirsty zombies . At the same time, the newly trained police officer Leon Scott Kennedy arrives elsewhere in the city to begin his duty in the local police station. He too is surprised by the conditions there. After both characters experience first contact with the living dead, they meet by chance and flee in a patrol car towards the police station. In an accident, however, both are separated again, but make their way to the police station independently of each other. It becomes clear that William Birkin was involved in research into the G virus. Since Claire's brother Chris cannot be found and she learns about the field work in the manor house, the two decide to flee the city. The escape leads Claire and Leon into the Raccoon City sewers, the place where the G-Virus was released. They finally reach the research laboratory, where an underground train station and train are supposed to help them escape from the city. In the laboratory, where the G-Virus was developed, the plot ends with defeating the mutated William Birkin. Claire, Leon and Sherry (the daughter of the Birkins) escape the city. Chris Redfield, Claire's brother, remains missing.

Characters

Playable characters

  • Leon S. Kennedy: New graduate of the Police Academy on his way to his first day as a police officer in Raccoon City. He is the first of the two playable main characters and is later supported by Ada Wong.
  • Claire Redfield: The second playable main character. She searches in Raccoon City for her brother Chris Redfield, the STARS member and survivor of the "mansion incident" from the previous game, and later meets Sherry Birkin.
  • Ada Wong: During the game she meets Leon S. Kennedy and the player has to play a short episode with her. Their role is kept opaque; at first she pretends to be looking for her boyfriend, later in the game she is revealed as an agent who is supposed to secure the remains of the Umbrella Cooperation.
  • Sherry Birkin: Twelve year old daughter of William and Anette Birkin. She is rescued by Claire Redfield and, like with Leon and Ada, the player has to play an episode with her in the course of Claire's scenario. She was infected with the T virus, but appears to be the only one resistant to it.
  • HUNK: Besides Leon, Claire and Sherry, he's the only one who escapes Raccoon City alive. " Hunk " is another word for "incredible" and is also a code name for the special agent of the Umbrella Security Service (USS). Not much is known about himself. His job is to get a sample of the G virus. You first have to unlock this character by achieving a certain ranking in the second scenario B.
  • Tofu: Like HUNK, you have to unlock this character by playing both scenarios twice with both characters each. It is a walking block of tofu that has no legs but a right and left hand. He is only armed with a knife and was intended more as a joke character of the programmers. You play the same part of the game with him as with HUNK.

Supporting characters

  • Dr. William Birkin: inventor of the G-Virus, husband of Anette and father of Sherry. He has devoted his whole life to researching the G-Virus, but when he is asked by an Umbrella Special Forces to hand over his work and is shot in the process, he injects himself with the G-Virus and becomes a Tyrant-like BOW
  • Anette Birkin: wife of William and mother of Sherry. She supports her husband in researching the G virus. However, she neglects her daughter in the process.
  • Police chief Irons: Chief of the Raccoon City police force, who became chief of police in the first place through personal deals with Umbrella. In the course of the game he is depicted as sliding more and more into madness.
  • Ben Bertolucci: Investigative journalist from Raccoon City, who senses his big breakthrough in the incidents surrounding the virus outbreak and therefore wants to bring it to the public. He locked himself in a cell at the police station so the zombies wouldn't catch him. There, however, an embryo of the G larva is implanted by the mutated William Birkin, which eventually breaks out of his body and kills him in the process.
  • Marvin Branagh: Police officer from Raccoon City who, together with his surviving colleagues, tried to defend the police station against the flood of attacking zombies. However, he was bitten himself. Leon and Claire find him seriously injured in the police station, where he informs the player about the events in the city. He eventually succumbs to his injuries and mutates into a zombie, whereupon the player has to kill him.
  • Robert Kendo: A friend of Barry Burton's and also the owner of the gun shop where the player takes refuge at the beginning of the game. He is killed by zombies when they storm his shop.
  • Brad Vickers: Although Chris Redfield is a trained pilot, he was used in this position with the STARS (Special Tactics And Rescue Service) Alpha Team. He is also a computer expert and responsible for IT security. He could not shake off his persecutor T-Nemesis and was killed by him as a result. Then Brad roams the police station as a zombie. In order to meet the police officer who has mutated into a zombie, you are not allowed to collect any objects on the way from the starting point to the police station. He is carrying a special item that can be picked up once he dies for good.

Game mechanics

Like its predecessor, the game is played from the third-person perspective , with the character moving through pre-rendered, static locations in changing views. It can be played either from the perspective of Claire Redfield or Leon Scott Kennedy . Depending on which character you choose, in some parts of the game the player also takes control of the two characters Sherry Birkin (as Claire ) or Ada Wong (as Leon ). The game can also be played with both characters in two scenarios (A and B), in which the plot is slightly different.

technology

Resident Evil 2 contains pre-calculated FMV sequences, which were called "groundbreaking" at the time.

The implementation for Nintendo 64 was the first game of the console running on a 512 Mbit large module was published.

analysis

In the Japanese version, the death scenes were removed, which were, however, still present on the enclosed demo CD of "Biohazard: Director's Cut".

For the first time in the series, the protagonists can be seen their injuries, which is very important for the course of the game, since the player is warned of the imminent death of his character. While the character in the first part is not impressed by his injuries until he dies, in the second part the character writhes even with minor injuries. With severe injuries, the figure even begins to hobble. However, this also significantly affects the character's freedom of movement. In addition, it is now possible to modify weapons with additional components in order to increase their rate of fire and penetration.

Remake

On August 12, 2015, it was announced on YouTube that a remake was being worked on. Two weeks beforehand, fans were asked on the official Facebook page in which direction a possible Resident Evil 2 remake should go. As part of E3 2018, the remake was announced worldwide for January 25, 2019 for the PlayStation 4 , Xbox One and Windows . The remake stays true to the horror and gets a new shoulder camera and 4K graphics for an even more intense gaming experience. Against Mr. X will be drawn into the fight.
