Resident Evil 3: Nemesis ( Japanese バイオハザード3 LAST ESCAPE , trans. Baiohazādo 3: Last Escape , Biohazard 3: Last Escape ) is a 1999 published computer game of Capcom . It is the third part of the series of the same name and, like its predecessors, belongs to the survival horror genre. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis first appeared on PlayStation, followed by conversions for Dreamcast, PC and GameCube.

In December 2019, Capcom announced the remake Resident Evil 3 for Playstation 4 , Windows and Xbox One for April 3, 2020.

action

Resident Evil 3 takes place a few hours before and after the events of the second part . The playable character this time is Jill Valentine , who is already known from the first part. She was suspended from STARS and is about to leave town when the disaster in Raccoon City takes its course. The city is overrun by zombies and there are hardly any survivors. However, through her work in the manor, Jill is already well prepared for the horror that awaits her. Umbrella France (the company's European headquarters) sends its new project Nemesis to Raccoon City . Its mission is to kill all STARS members because they know about Umbrella's illegal bioweapons research. The player therefore meets Nemesis several times in the game without being able to finally defeat him before the final. During the escape from the city one meets some of Umbrella's soldiers, they have the task of evacuating civilians and high-ranking Umbrella shareholders, but without their knowledge they are also used as "guinea pigs" to test the effectiveness of the latest virus generation. For a short section of the game you slip into the role of the UBCS soldier (Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service) Carlos Oliveira , who has to find an antidote for Jill, who is meanwhile infected with the T or G virus. The plot ends with the destruction of Raccoon City by a nuclear weapon and the successful escape of the two playable characters.

Characters

This part of the series is the first in which you cannot choose between different playable characters.

Playable characters

  • Jill Valentine: She is quitting her service with the STARS (Special Tactics and Rescue Service). The former machine expert just wants to leave Raccoon City as quickly as possible, but that turns out to be more difficult than expected because the T-Virus has now contaminated the whole city.
  • Carlos Oliveira: Part of the UBCS Delta Team (Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service), Group A. Carlos is a young mercenary with Indian blood. As the game progresses, Jill meets him and his comrades. You can play an episode with him later. He is also an unlockable mini-game character.
  • Mikhail Victor: Is the troop leader of Group A and Carlos is the direct superior. This character must be unlocked and can then be selected in the mini-game "The Mercenaries".
  • Nicholai Ginovaef: The observer and group leader of group B can also be unlocked and is then available in the mini-game.

Supporting characters

  • Dario Rosso: A civilian who Jill meets in a warehouse in Raccoon City. While on the run he lost his daughter Lucia. For fear of the zombies he refuses to leave the camp, he does not accept the request to go with Jill.
  • Brad Vickers: One of the few STARS members to return alive from the Bravo Team's search. On his escape from Raccoon City, which he believed to be safe, he meets his former comrade Jill and warns her of a danger from which she apparently cannot escape.
  • Tyrell Patrick: Belongs to Group B of the UBCS and is an excellent mercenary. To avoid life imprisonment for smuggling weapons that were used in a massacre, he joined the Umbrella Mercenaries. You have to make a certain decision to run into him.
  • Murphy Seeker: He's the Group A sniper. As with Tyrell, his motive is to get a life sentence. He brought 20 members of a gang around which his siblings brutally murdered. As with Tyrell, it takes a certain decision to come across him.

New game elements

Resident Evil 3 is the only part so far in which the so-called live selection concept is used. The player is faced with an unexpected situation in which he has to choose between two possible solutions. An example of this is a brief earthquake in which the ground behind the player collapses and a heavy object rolls towards the player at the same time. The decision is to either avoid the object or jump into the previously created pit. One of these live selection options also influences the end sequence in the game. Depending on how the player has decided, the game ends either with Jill and Carlos fleeing by helicopter, or with adversary Nicholai escaping with this helicopter (or you shoot him down with Nicholai). In this case, Jill and Carlos will be picked up by another helicopter. Even if the pilot is not named, it is Barry Burton from the first part.

Another new concept is the manufacture of ammunition. While this could only be found like other items in the previous parts, in Nemesis it can now also be made from three types of gunpowder in different combinations. Depending on how often you make ammunition with it, you can also make better ammunition with it over time.

Facts

In order to avoid further indexing, the game was severely defused and thus considerably distorted in the eyes of many fans. In the German version the blood was colored gray, defeated opponents flash briefly and then disappear from the scene, which was criticized with outrage in the fan base as a break in the atmosphere. Another difference is noticeable in the survival bonus mode. While the player in the Japanese version receives a time credit for every zombie killed, in the German version he only receives a bonus for opponents of animal origin, which means that it is not possible to achieve a correspondingly high number of points. However, in the European version for the Nintendo GameCube, the uncut version can be played by changing the language setting of the console to English. This also works on the Nintendo Wii. (The GameCube versions, however, were also indexed for this reason). In the commercially available European version for the PC, this is also possible when the game is installed in English. In March 2014, the game was prematurely removed from the index. After a re-examination by the USK, the game was then rated uncut for ages 16 and over.

Film adaptation / novel

The plot of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis served as the basis for the second film in the Resident Evil series, see Resident Evil: Apocalypse . However, the film deviates from the game in many details or extends the original plot (e.g. with Dr. Ashford and his daughter).

In addition to the film, the Resident Evil novel Volume 5 Nemesis also plays in this scenario.
