Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles ( Japanese バ イ オ ハ ザ ー ド ア ン ブ レ ラ ・ ク ロ ニ ク ル ズ , Baiohazādo Amburera Kuronikuruzu for Biohazard: Umbrella Chronicles ) was released on November 30, 2007 exclusively for Nintendo Wii in Europe. It is a so-called rail shooter that can be played either with the Wiimote or the Wii Zapper . Since the game has not been classified by the USK and Nintendo does not allow unlabeled games to be released for its system in Germany, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles was only released in other European countries (including German-speaking countries). This part is now indicated in Germany.

In addition to the familiar storyline, new content and connections have been created that can be played as bonus content for good players. Playable characters of the bonus missions are Albert Wesker, Ada Wong, HUNK and Rebecca Chambers.

With Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles a successor to the Wii was released in 2009, which uses the same game principle and, despite almost identical graphics and violence, received USK approval from the age of 18.

For the 15th anniversary of the Resident Evil series, The Umbrella Chronicles appeared together with The Darkside Chronicles as an HD edition under the name " Resident Evil: Chronicles HD Collection " as a download from the PlayStation Store , which can be downloaded via Playstation Move as well as DualShock -3 controller can be controlled. Due to the indexing of The Umbrella Chronicles , this collection is not available as such in the German PS store, but The Darkside Chronicles HD can be purchased individually.

Game mechanics

Aiming in the game is done with the Wiimote and optionally the Nunchuk controller or the Wii Zapper to control the crosshairs visible on the screen. The controller is held directly towards the screen. As is typical for Rail Shooter, the player does not have the opportunity to control the character of the game himself. The movement of the character is essentially predetermined and follows a fixed plan, but situation-dependent evasive movements can be carried out or one of two possible paths can be chosen in good time. The game allows two players to play at the same time, each controlling his own cursor.

The environment of the game world, which is divided into individual levels and chapters, is z. Sometimes interactive and contains various destructible objects such as cupboards, containers, lamps or statues. These are often consumables such as. B. cures or ammunition hidden, but also unlockable extras and background information on the story can be unlocked in this way.

Between the individual levels, the inventory can be managed and new weapons can be bought and improved. The currency for this is the highscore points achieved in the game, which are earned depending on how the level is played through (time required, accuracy, deaths suffered, etc.).

action

In The Umbrella Chronicles , storylines from Resident Evil Zero , Resident Evil and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis are mostly taken up and re-enacted. In the last chapter you cross a new scenario, which forms a joint conclusion for all previous ones and which deals with the disclosure of the machinations of the Umbrella Corporation and its eventual demise. In this scenario, the player takes on the roles of Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine , who, five years after the first T-Virus outbreak in Racoon City, enter the Umbrella headquarters in Russia along with other anti-BOW activists.

Books

The game was also published in two books by Osamu Makino : The Umbrella Chronicles I and The Umbrella Chronicles II .

Reviews

Reviews were largely positive. Among other things, the nostalgia factor and the unlockable extras were praised. It was criticized that the game hardly goes beyond the old genre conventions.
