Resident Evil Gaiden (Japanese Biohazard Gaiden ) is a survival horror video game developed by Capcom and released in 2001 for the Game Boy Color . In the Resident Evil handheld offshoot, SWAT veteran and STARS member Barry Burton goes in search of Leon S. Kennedy , who went missing on a cruise ship while searching for a bio-organic weapon.
action
To put an end to the machinations of the Umbrella Corporation , an underground organization was formed made up of former STARS members and former Umbrella employees. A new bio-organic weapon ( BOW ) developed by the Umbrella Laboratories has been stolen and is on board the Starlight cruise ship , which is sailing to Europe. Leon S. Kennedy is on board the ship to destroy the BOW , but the contact with him is lost. Barry sets out to look for Leon .
Resident Evil: Gaiden is not part of the series canon, because Leon is infected in this part and Resident Evil 4 would not be possible.
Game mechanics
In Resident Evil Gaiden , the events are not presented in a 3D view as in other parts of the series, but in a 2D top view . When you meet an opponent, the view changes to first- person perspective . The player has to press the shot button when a bar moving from left to right is over an opponent (e.g. a zombie).
The puzzles in the game are essentially limited to finding keys to open locked doors. Items typical of the series, such as medicinal plants, are also represented here.
With Leon , Lucia and Barry , the game offers three playable characters.
Reviews
Reviews of Resident Evil Gaiden were largely negative. The story and graphics were praised, but the monotonous music could not inspire. The biggest point of criticism, however, was that the switch to a top view meant that Resident Evil's typical shock moments did not occur. The monotonous puzzles and the lack of variety in the gameplay were also criticized frequently.
