Resident Evil 5 ( Japanese バ イ オ ハ ザ ー ド 5 , trans. Baiohazādo 5 , Biohazard 5) is the seventh part of the video game series of the same name from Capcom . The title was released in Europe on March 13, 2009 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 , the PC version followed on September 18 of the same year. In June 2016 a remaster version for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was also released . In October 2019, a version of the game for the Nintendo Switch was released .

action

Chris Redfield is sent to the fictional African Autonomous Zone Kijuju on behalf of the Bio-Terrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA) to arrest the arms dealer Ricardo Irving. Irving trades in Bio-Organic Weapons ( BOWs ) and the viruses for biological warfare known from the previous games . In Kijuju, Redfield meets the African BSAA agent Sheva Alomar. Her parents were killed in an incident at an Umbrella Corporation laboratory that ultimately led Sheva to join the BSAA.

In cutscenes , another storyline is told that originated before the story of Resident Evil 5: Chris Redfield and his partner Jill Valentine were able to catch the arch villain Albert Wesker, known from the previous games, on the estate of the Umbrella founder Ozwell E. Spencer. A fight ensued in which Wesker was physically superior due to the viruses injected into him. Jill and Wesker fell out of the mansion window into a ravine, whereupon both were believed dead. However, Chris Redfield sees a picture on a PDA of a woman whom he thinks he recognizes as Jill. He then wants to clarify in addition to his assignment, whether Jill is still alive.

Wesker's goal is to wipe out the world's population using a new super virus called "Uroboros" and only allow the few who are resistant to the virus to survive, in order to create a race of genetically superior "super people". To this end, he worked with the head of TriCell , Excella Gionne, a pharmaceutical company operating in Africa and competing with Umbrella . However, he cheated on her and infected her with the Uroboros virus.

In the course of the game, Chris and Sheva can defeat Irving, mutated by the "Las Plagas" parasite, and then meet Wesker and Jill, who is controlled by Wesker through a device. You free Jill and finally defeat Wesker in the last level of the game during a fight in a volcano.

Resident Evil 5 takes up many open questions from the previous games and explains numerous connections. For example, Wesker's career is highlighted, the emergence of the Umbrella Corporation is presented and the evolution of viruses is outlined.

Game concepts and technology

The gameplay is largely identical to that of Resident Evil 4 . As there, the player controls the character from a third-person perspective using backgrounds that are calculated in real time . The basic features of the cooperation mode, in which two characters play the game in parallel, have been adopted from Resident Evil Zero. However, the second character in solo mode is controlled by the AI and you cannot switch back and forth between the characters during the game. Furthermore, Sheva can only be selected from the second round in the main game. In duo mode, both figures are controlled by a human player via split screen on the console or via the Internet .

In contrast to its predecessor, the objects currently in the inventory are managed while the game is running, without pausing it. On the one hand, this enables faster, dynamic weapon changes, but also requires a more tactical approach, since the game continues during this time and opponents can continue to attack. Weapons and items must be selected and placed in the limited inventory before the start of each chapter, with each figure having its own inventory slot. So you have to decide beforehand on the right equipment and who should use which weapons. Objects that are not required or not selected remain in a shared inventory that can only be accessed between chapters. Furthermore, new weapons and items can only be bought between the chapters, or weapons in possession can be upgraded. Dealers who were to be found in the game world as in the predecessor, no longer exist. Gold coins are used as currency, which can be found during the game or can be earned by selling treasures that are also found in the game or weapons and items that are no longer needed.

After playing through it once, the mercenary mode, also known from previous games, is available, in which you have to defeat as many opponents as possible in a short time with several selectable figures on different maps; as well as a new versus mode in which players can compete against each other via the Internet. In addition, an additional, extra-difficult level of difficulty is unlocked for the main game.

At E3 2010 , Sony and Capcom announced an update of the previously published Gold Edition of the title for the PlayStation Move control , which appeared on September 15, 2010 in the form of a free patch. The update will be installed automatically when you start the game.

Additional content

On April 7th, 2009 the first additional content was the " Versus " mode, in which players can compete against each other over the Internet according to the PvP principle. However, this was denied the release of the USK, which is why he did not appear in Germany for the time being.

17 (Xbox 360) and 18 February 2010 (PlayStation 3) appeared in nightmares lost ( Engl. Lost in Nightmares ) the first of two additional episodes that expand the main game. This episode represents a kind of prehistory, which is already taken up in places in the main game: The BSAA was able to find the whereabouts of the Umbrella founder Ozwell E. Spencer, whereupon Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine go there to meet him. There they meet Wesker, who has already killed Spencer. In the fight against him, Jill sacrifices herself for Chris and falls out of the window into the sea with Wesker.

The DLC is atmospherically and playfully based on the first Resident Evil. The place of action is a supposedly abandoned mansion, which is very similar to the one already known from the first part. The number of opponents has also been reduced to a single, very strong and recurring monster. In addition, the mercenary mode has been expanded and new costumes for the characters have been offered.

The second additional episode Desperate Escape (Engl. Desperate Escape was released on 3rd and 4th March 2010. This episode clarifies how Jill escaped after their liberation from Wesker's control device by Chris and Sheva): The already occurring in the main game BSAA- Captain Josh Stone finds the exhausted Jill in the monarch's room and has to fight her way through hordes of enemies with her, in order to finally be able to escape with a helicopter. With this in turn, as seen at the end of the main game, the two save Chris and Sheva after the final battle against Wesker from the volcano.

This DLC playfully represents the exact opposite of Lost in Nightmares . The proportion of action has increased significantly - even compared to the main game - and the pace is consistently very high. The players are constantly attacked by opponents and have to fight their way to the roof of the helicopter landing pad.

The new content is available as DLC via PlayStation Network and Xbox Live . The Gold Edition for Xbox 360 and PC came with the corresponding download codes, while the PlayStation 3 version and the new edition for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One integrated them directly into the game.

New releases

On March 12, 2010 the Gold Edition for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC appeared, which contained the core game and all additional content. In this version the "Versus" mode was now included, although there was still no USK approval for this.

In 2016 there was a new release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, in which (as with the remaster of the predecessor) the refresh rate was increased to 60 FPS and optionally a slightly enlarged image section can be played. The resolution has not been changed and is like the original 1080p, but the edge flickering and the tearing that occurs with the Xbox 360 version at the maximum resolution has been eliminated. This version also contains all additional content including the " Versus " mode, which has been fully integrated into the game. Like the original, it was approved by the USK from the age of 18.

reception

Like Resident Evil 4 , the fifth part moves further away from the classic survival horror and tends more towards a pure action game . For example, the proportion of puzzles compared to the proportion of fights with opponents has decreased significantly. The setting in sunny Africa instead of a dark mansion or an old castle also creates a completely different atmosphere than the earlier titles.

The founder of the survival horror genre and resident evil creator Shinji Mikami was also critical: “I won't play it because I might not like it and because it won't be the way I want it to be Introducing the game. ”He continues:“ It wouldn't cause me anything but stress, but I think the players will like it, not someone who helped develop the Resident Evil series. ”

The sales figures confirm Mikami's assumption: in the first two weeks of sales around 2.5 million units were sold worldwide. Almost 5 million copies have now been sold.

Resident Evil 5 received consistently good reviews from the trade press. So, u. a.
