M! Games (until 2008: ! MAN AC ) is the name of a German , since 1993 monthly multiplatform - Video game - magazine . The publisher is Cybermedia Verlagsgesellschaft based in Mering near Augsburg . M! Games does not specialize in a specific video game system, but tests and reports on games for all common platforms. The magazine is one of the longest-lived German-language games publications ever.

history

Original MAN! AC logo

The M! Games first appeared in 1993 and was then launched under the name MAN! AC . This makes it the oldest multi-format video game magazine still on the market in German-speaking countries. The founding editorial team at that time consisted of Winnie Forster and Martin Gaksch , who together held the post of editor-in-chief, as well as Andreas Knauf and Ingo Zaborowski . All four had previously worked for the Video Games and Power Play at Markt + Technik Verlag in Haar near Munich . The editorial team grew rapidly, and over the years Heinrich Lenhardt , Robert Bannert , Stephan Freundorfer and Colin Gäbel were able to be won as authors.

Over the years, MAN! AC has revised it again and again, but these primarily concerned the layout and were otherwise rather subtle. After 180 issues, the magazine was renamed to M for the 15th anniversary of issue 181 (October 2008)! Games. The renaming to M! Games went hand in hand with more profound changes. According to the company, in times of increasingly important internet, the "longest-lasting video game magazine in Germany" should remain future-proof as a print medium. In addition to being larger, the magazine was printed on glossy paper from this point on and the pages were glued to the back instead of being stapled in the middle as before. M! According to their editors, Games should also “place more emphasis on exclusive reports, well-researched articles, background reports and retro reports”. The address maniac.de is still used for the website, which has also been heavily revised .

In 2013 the magazine celebrated its 20th anniversary.

content

The contents of the magazine are news from the world of video games, previews , tests of newly released games, tests of imported games not available in Germany, handhelds , technical questions, background reports and letters to the editor.

There was a visually prominent section in the magazine called MAN! AC-Extended . In this booklet-in-booklet, which served as a background magazine, traditional video game series and their makers were presented, conversations were held and occasionally a look behind the scenes was taken. It also included overviews of fan articles from large series such as Metal Gear or Resident Evil . With the transition to M! Games, the separate extended part was integrated into the edition.

From issue 134 (December 2004) to issue 180 (September 2008) each issue was a DVD when, on the next to trailers , previews and testing of video games as a Anyman! AC was designated self-produced short film.
After proof of age, the magazine could also be subscribed to in a version “18 and over”, although this only had an effect on the DVD, which was expanded with corresponding trailers, reports and tests. The booklet itself was identical in both versions. Since, in the opinion of the editors, a DVD is no longer an exclusive feature of a magazine, the M! Games has not included a DVD since the 11/2008 issue.

Digital version

The MAN! AC in Portable Document Format (overall expenditure 2002-2007, except 3/2002) was available for subscribers on the Maniac homepage. With the change of the website in 2008, however, the access to old editions as PDF disappeared. The possibility of a PDF archive was discussed in the official forum but was not given a high priority by the editors. Only four historically important editions are currently available as PDF files:

  • the MAN! AC first edition from November 1993,
  • the 100th edition (February 2002),
  • the last MAN! AC edition (October 2008) and
  • the first M! Games issue (November 2008).

There is also no complete PDF archive from M! Games . Only from output 205 (11/2010) these users is Apple (equipments touch iPod , iPhone and iPad ) on iTunes - App available. Issue 201 (7/2010) is included with the app, issues 202 to 204 have not yet appeared. The app was also released for Android in October 2015 .

layout

The layout of the magazine covers of MAN! AC , at that time still aimed at a younger target group, differs markedly from that of M! Games . Since switching to M! Games, there is a kiosk - Edition and a subscriber issue of the booklet. The subscription version differs through a special cover, which apart from the M! - Logo does not contain any text, but shows a large artwork. The subscription version of issue 242 used on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the M! The cover motif is the original title page of the first edition from 1993.

Rating System

From the beginning, MAN! AC evaluated in game tests using the percentage system used in video and computer game magazines in German-speaking countries.

Test reports

The test reports of the "gaming tests" are a central element of the magazine and are " PAL - tests and" " import tests" divided. All ratings from the first edition in 1993 can be viewed in the MAN! AC test reports database , from the M! Games first edition, complete test reports with screenshots are available for all tested games . On Spieletipps.de the test results were Conclusion from issue 9/2003 visible away to the ratings of all magazines in 2011 were.

Annual content

Since 1994, once a year (usually at the beginning of the year), a register of all contributions and game tests with ratings from the previous year has been printed. The annual contents of the last four years (2008 to 2011) are also available digitally.

High scores

Up until now, ratings beyond the 90 percent limit have only been given to game milestones. The highest rating ever achieved was given in 1997 to the NTSC version of Super Mario 64 . In addition, a games of the year table was drawn up every year on the basis of these ratings , the games of which were accordingly briefly presented there.
