The Last of Us Part II

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Last of Us Part II is a video game from the US developer studio Naughty Dog , which was released exclusively for the PlayStation 4 . The third-person - action adventure plays five years after the events of its predecessor, The Last of Us in the post-apocalyptic United States . The player partially slips into the role of Ellie, as in the previous one. In addition to Ellies, the story of Abby, who is also playable, is told.

Even before the release date, The Last of Us Part II received mostly positive reviews. Over four million copies of the game were sold in the first three days; which until then no exclusive PlayStation 4 game has succeeded.

action

The plot will start five years after the events of The Last of Us , the protagonists Ellie and Joel have now found a home in a settlement in Jackson, Wyoming . The relationship between Ellie and Joel is strained due to history. After a terrible incident, Ellie goes on a vengeance campaign.

Gameplay

The player controls the character Ellie from the third-person perspective through a post-apocalyptic version of the United States. As in the first part, Ellie meets so-called infected people during her struggle for survival. These are people who have been turned into monstrous beings by a pandemic. In addition to the enemy types already known from The Last of Us , there are other variants of infected people. For example the shamblers , which spray gaseous acid and can take a lot of damage. In addition to the infected, there is also danger from human factions, such as the Washington Liberation Front, who hunt down other survivors with fighting dogs.

In order to defend himself against the enemy, the player can use numerous weapons, such as knives, shotguns, pistols or bows and arrows. There are options to further improve weapons and Ellie's skills over the course of the story and to adapt them individually to the play style. This makes it possible to carry out a confrontation directly, but also to carry out stealth attacks and sneak up on opponents. In contrast to the character Joel from the first part, Ellie is more mobile, can now jump, evade and crawl, for example to hide in tall grass. There is also an eavesdropping mode that allows you to see your own scent trail.

Background, production and setting

Making-of (a look behind the scenes) during the production of The Last of Us Part II: Motion Capture was used.

The first drafts for the game were made in 2014. The motion capture recordings for the trailer that was shown at PlayStation Experience 2016 were also made at this time . Due to various personnel changes in the studio itself, it was decided to put the full focus on the completion of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End . As a consequence, the two-team philosophy, which was introduced during the development of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and The Last of Us , was revoked to form a large team. So it was only after this work was completed in 2016 that development on the sequel was resumed by a small part of the studio. Most of the studio, on the other hand, concentrated on the single-player DLC after the completion of Uncharted 4 , from which Uncharted: The Lost Legacy later emerged. The Last of Us Part II has only been in full development since this development was completed in July / August 2017 . The motion and performance capture process for the protagonists Ellie (played by Ashley Johnson ) and Joel (played by Troy Baker ) began in spring 2017.

In a second trailer, which was presented at Paris Games Week 2017, four new characters from the game have been introduced: Emily (played by Emily Swallow ), the siblings Lev (Ian Alexander) and Yara (Victoria Grace) and one has not yet been named named woman, embodied by Laura Bailey. During the panel discussion at the Playstation Experience 2017, which included Neil Druckmann , co-author Halley Gross and some members of the cast, the city of Seattle was confirmed as one of the locations in the game.

The publication was originally planned for February 21, 2020, but was initially postponed to May 29, 2020 before it was postponed again to June 19, 2020 in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic .

In the Middle East , the game was banned prior to release in connection with LGBT content.

Tests published before the game's release date gave The Last of Us Part II top marks on average. According to Metacritic , the game (as of July 28, 2020) received an average of 94 out of 100 points with 117 ratings. In the PlayStation Store, pre-orderers have already been able to submit reviews and have thus consolidated the overall rating to 5 out of 5 stars with over 3000 reviews.

After the game was released, controversy arose over the plot of the title, the portrayal of homosexuality, and the evolution of the characters. The ratings of the players were partly significantly worse than the previous top ratings, The Last of Us Part II only achieved a 5.6 on Metacritic based on around 135,000 ratings (as of July 28, 2020). Some critics attribute this to so-called review bombing by a minority of video players. There were death threats against staff at the studio as well as homophobic , transphobic and anti-Semitic insults.
