Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (abbreviated MGS4) is the fourth computer game of the Metal Gear Solid series , that of Kojima Productions developed and Konami released was. Like its predecessors, the game is a stealth shooter and was released on June 12, 2008 for the PlayStation 3 .

action

Metal Gear Solid 4 is set in 2014, nine years after the Metal Gear Solid plot and five years after Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty . A "war economy" was created around the world, with so-called PMCs ( Private Military Companies ) who send soldiers out for money. PMC soldiers are equipped with nanomachines, which improve their skills on the battlefield. The control network of these nanomachines is called the Sons of the Patriots (SOP). Liquid Ocelot is preparing to harm this system. Snake is now feeling accelerated aging from his clone status and has less than a year to live. He now lives with Dr. Hal “Otacon” Emmerich and Olga Gurlukovich's daughter Sunny. When his former commander Roy Campbell asks him to stop Liquid on one final mission, Snake accepts and goes to war in the Middle East, where Liquid is likely to be in hiding.

Gameplay

The game is a stealth shooter, in which the player has to avoid open confrontation with opponents, as is typical of the genre, and has to explore the levels more carefully.

However, MGS4 leaves the decision to the player, whether he wants to fight his way through offensively or rather quietly. Compared to its predecessor, MGS4 also offers a camouflage suit that takes on the appearance of the surroundings. Furthermore, the player is supported by a robot that can explore the environment, stun guards and defuse traps.

MGS4 is played in the third person perspective , whereby the camera perspective can be rotated around the character . In addition to the use of weapons (including rocket launchers and grenades), the game also offers close combat techniques such as punches, kicks and strangleholdings . The play figure is able to walk in a kneeling position as well as in an upright position, as well as running, sneaking and jumping. This enables fine adjustment to the environment so as not to be discovered. The camouflage suit, called Octo-Camo, enables the color to be adapted and the pattern of the surrounding surface to be imitated. This increases the likelihood of enemies remaining undetected.

By sneaking up on the opponent's back, they can be forced to hold up their hands and drop their weapon. The opponent can then be searched and useful items (such as rations) can be taken. Other possibilities, such as throwing an empty magazine, knocking on an object, lying down a playboy, etc. allow confusion and distraction of the opponent.

A new introduction to the game is the ability to purchase weapons, ammunition and other items from the Drebin weapons dealer. If you collect weapons from opponents, these are exchanged for Drebin points. The Drebin points can then be exchanged for goods.

Marketing and Success

Two months before the release, journalists were invited to a “review event” where they could play the game. One million units of the game were sold in the first week after its release. The game has been sold more than five million times since its release in June 2008 and was considered the best-selling PS3 exclusive game to date.

Similar to Grand Theft Auto IV , the game was also perceived outside of the usual game testers. In addition to Spiegel Online, Focus , Die Welt , Stern and the New York Times also reported .

Spiegel Online describes the game as a "blatant alternative" to Grand Theft Auto IV , because of the fixed level structure and the "rigid narrative order". In terms of the game principle, it is a "conservative console title from the eighties". The special thing about MGS4, however, is the photo-realistic look in the game and the action scenes in the cutscenes , which are “on par with Hollywood and Hong Kong”.

The action itself in MGS4 is presented positively. It reflects today's politics:

“The dark world [...] is an over-the-top distortion, a gloomy extrapolation of today's US foreign policy. Proxy wars are raging all over the planet, [...] The "war economy" that torments the planet and keeps it going at the same time is the central issue, and the question of which evil can be done away with without making another one stronger. "

- Spiegel Online

However, the length of some cut scenes, which last up to 45 minutes, is criticized.

The world describes MGS4 and other new games like GTA4 as serious competition for the cinema. While visitor numbers were at their lowest level in 13 years, the computer games industry in Germany would have recorded an increase of 21 percent in 2007; in the USA the increase would be 40 percent. Ultimately, the world does not see film and computer games as competitors, rather both media are moving towards each other.

“At the moment, there is hardly any talk of Iron Man , Indiana Jones or the Racer family - although they have all been to the cinema in recent months. The heroes they talk about are Master Chief, Altair, Niko Bellic and Solid Snake "

- World Online

Also 4Players praises the scenes, the Grand Theft Auto IV and Hollywood productions would beat. However, the coverage system cannot keep up with new titles, the textures used are muddy in some places and the gameplay offers nothing new. In direct comparison to its predecessor, the gameplay is simpler and therefore not very innovative, since in many cases the player only has to reach a waypoint. So overall, the plot that is told by the cutscenes is special.
