Hideo Kojima ( Japanese 小島 秀 夫 , Kojima Hideo ; born August 24, 1963 in Setagaya , Tokyo ) is a Japanese game developer . From 2011 to 2015, he was Vice President of Konami . He became known through the video game series Metal Gear .

Life

Childhood and first jobs

Kojima moved to Kobe with his parents when he was three and spent his childhood there. He became interested in films from a young age, wrote short stories with 14 and made 8mm films . He wanted to work as a director one day . In 1986, 23-year-old Kojima applied to Konami as a game developer and released Metal Gear a year later . The game was considered innovative and original, but initially brought the company only moderate success.

In 1988 the game Snatcher was released for MSX and later in a revised version for the Sony PlayStation . From the game's plot is similar to science fiction - Adventure the movie Blade Runner . 1990 came the sequel to Metal Gear : Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake . It appeared for the MSX standard, which had already passed its zenith, and did not bring the hoped-for breakthrough.

Two years later, Snatcher was implemented for various game consoles and in 1994 Policenauts appeared first for PC-98 and later again for consoles. Kojima also produced Tokimeki Memorial , a Ren'ai simulation , for the Japanese market . All games were very successful in Japan .

International breakthrough

Kojima achieved worldwide fame with Metal Gear Solid , the third title in the Metal Gear series, which was first released in 1998 for the PlayStation . The multi-layered characters, the complex storyline and the innovative ideas brought with them a large fan base. With over 5.5 million CDs sold, it was one of the most successful games of the year. Further awards were added.

Metal Gear: Ghost Babel was released for the Game Boy Color . But unlike the previous Metal Gear parts, this part contained an alternative plot to Metal Gear Solid .

2001 appeared Mecha - action game Zone of the Enders for PlayStation 2 , which was also successful. In 2002 the official successor to Metal Gear Solid appeared , exclusively for PlayStation 2. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was also very successful. With seven million copies sold, the game surpassed the sales figures of its predecessor.

In 2003, Kojima produced Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner for PS2 and Boktai : The Sun Is in Your Hand for Game Boy Advance . The special thing about Boktai is that the game is equipped with a light sensor for a special gaming experience.

After Boktai he produced a remake of Metal Gear Solid for the GameCube . The cutscenes from Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes were done by Ryūhei Kitamura this time .

In 2006 he worked on Metal Gear Solid: Bande Dessinée (from the French Bande Dessinée ) and Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel for the PSP , which included the first Metal Gear Solid part completely in drawn form by Ashley Wood (among others responsible for the cutscenes in MGS: Portable Ops ). In 2008, the successor Metal Gear Solid 2: Bande Dessinée and Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel 2 , which depicts the story of the second part Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty , was released in Japan and the USA . Here, however, it was decided to publish a DVD version instead of a PSP successor. This product also consists of two DVDs, the Digital Graphic Novel 2 and, in addition, the completely synchronized first Digital Graphic Novel.

In June 2008, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was released for the PlayStation 3 . In November 2008, Hideo Kojima received an MTV Games Award (Lifetime Achievement Award) for his life's work, including for creating the Metal Gear series.

On March 18, 2014, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes was released , which is a playable prologue for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain . The Phantom Pain followed in September 2015 and is the last installment in the Metal Gear Solid saga that Kojima was involved in. After disputes with Konami, Hideo Kojima left the video game company in 2015. In the wake of the conflict, Kojima's then Silent Hills project was discontinued and the Konami studio, Kojima Productions, which was responsible for developing the Metal Gear Solid series, was dissolved. however, in December 2015 Kojima re-established the development studio under the same name as an independent company. He also announced a partnership with Sony Computer Entertainment . At E3 2016 , the new Death Stranding project was unveiled, a time-exclusive title for Sony's PlayStation 4 . Personal

According to two Spiegel Online reports, Kojima suffers from gaming nausea , which means that he can develop games but cannot play them because it would make him sick. In an interview from 2006 he relativized the fact that it is a partial motion sickness like for example first-person shooters who have a quick camera change.

Kojima has good contacts in the US film industry and works regularly with industry giants such as the composer Harry Gregson-Williams . He is also close friends with directors Guillermo del Toro and Nicolas Winding Refn .

Influences

Hideo Kojima is an avowed cineast , in an interview with Time magazine he says: “… I really like films. I try to see at least one film a day, if not more. Through films I learned a lot about political, cultural and economic topics that I wasn't interested in before or that I wasn't aware of. "
