Death Stranding ( Japanese :デ ス ・ ス ト ラ ン デ ィ ン グ , Desu Sutorandingu , German about: "Toten-entanglement") is a video game from the Japanese development studio Kojima Productions . The open world game was released on November 8, 2019 for PlayStation 4 and on July 14, 2020 for Microsoft Windows . Lead developer of Death Stranding is Hideo Kojima .
The actor Norman Reedus , Mads Mikkelsen , Lea Seydoux , Margaret Qualley , Tommie Earl Jenkins , Troy Baker , Lindsay Wagner , Emily O'Brien and film directors Guillermo del Toro and Nicolas Winding Refn attended by motion and performance capture as well as a voice actor on participated in the production of the interactive film .

After the collapse of civilization, the player in the role of the protagonist Sam Porter Bridges, played by actor Norman Reedus , roams a devastated country in order to reconnect a fragmented society and save humanity from extinction. One of Sam's jobs is to deliver goods and essentials to various warehouses with surviving people. The eponymous "Death Stranding" refers to a past event in which a series of mysterious explosions around the world wiped out a large part of humanity. This was followed by drastically changed environmental conditions such as "rain of time" and "stranded things" (souls from the realm of the dead, GD for short), as well as other mysterious phenomena.
Gameplay
Developer Hideo Kojima sums up the gameplay as follows in an interview: “Death Stranding is a completely new type of action game in which the player aims to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society. The theme of the strand or connection welds together all of the elements of the game, including the story and gameplay . As Sam Porter Bridges you try to bridge the social gaps. In doing this, you create new bonds or threads with other players around the world. I hope that as you play you will realize how important it is to build bonds with other people. ”The player looks for a way through mostly surreal areas to deliver goods to the survivors, and fights against dangerous creatures who want to wipe out all life in the world. He also has to fight off bandits who are after his supplies and protect himself from a mysterious rain that accelerates the aging process.
Killing enemies is one possibility, but there should be other options, for example by means of a creeping approach to avoid the dangers. According to an analysis by the American Internet magazine “Polygon”, the game mechanics include an optional online functionality with a so-called asynchronous multiplayer mode. The game is not played in a classic cooperative mode by several participants at the same time, but the player can share necessary consumables with others or announce the location of safe places, the "safe houses", without seeing a fellow player in the world to get. Another aspect of the game mechanics concerns the loss of a screen life: If the player is defeated, he appears in another dimension, from which he can escape and then re-enter the game world.

After a lengthy corporate conflict with Konami , Kojima Productions became an independent game developer in 2015 . In the same year, Hideo Kojima announced the partnership with the publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment as CEO of the development studio . In 2016, Death Stranding was announced at the E3 video game fair in Los Angeles . During the production, Hideo Kojima was inspired by a Japanese short story by the writer Abe Kōbō .

The test results from the game magazines were mostly positive in the run-up to the actual publication, but fluctuated between very high and mediocre ratings. The graphics, atmosphere and the novel gameplay were praised . On the other hand, the slowly told story was criticized. The penetrating product placement of the Monster Energy brand in the game also met with criticism. Many testers emphasized that, despite its undisputed qualities , Death Stranding is not suitable for every type of player.
