Metal Gear Solid [ ˈmetl ɡɪə ˈsɒlɪd ] ( Japanese メ タ ル ギ ア ソ リ ッ ド , Metaru Gia Soriddo ) is a computer game with stealth and action elements by Hideo Kojima . It was developed by Konami and published in 1998. Metal Gear Solid is the third main part of the Metal Gear series after Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake . It appeared for the PlayStation game console and was later ported to Windows . The game has been sold over six million times worldwide. Metal Gear Solid has also received numerous awards and high ratings in specialist magazines.

Metal Gear Solid is the first part of the series that has a voice output and was realized in 3D graphics. Hence the "Solid" in the name of all parts of the new series; it can be translated as "spatial". In Japan, Snake, the playable protagonist of the game, is voiced by voice actor Akio Ōtsuka , in the English version Snake was dubbed by David Hayter and in the German version by Stephan Grothgar.

action

The action takes place between February 21 and 27, 2005, six years after the events of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake and thus ten years after the first part, Metal Gear. FOXHOUND, a renegade genetically enhanced special commando, is carrying out a coup on a remote Alaskan archipelago that is, in fact, Shadow Moses, a secret government disarmament facility. The unit, led by the mercenary Liquid Snake, have taken control of several atomic warheads and the Mecha Metal Gear REX, which can fire the nuclear missiles. With this trump card, the terrorists blackmail the US government in order to obtain the remains of the legendary mercenary Big Boss.

Solid Snake is forced to return from retirement and, at Colonel Roy Campbell's request, is set to penetrate the terrorists' defenses and dismantle the terrorist threat. In addition, Snake is supposed to free the two hostages: DARPA boss Donald Anderson and ArmsTech president Kenneth Baker. Meryl Silverburgh, Colonel Campbell's daughter (who is believed to be his niece), who did not participate in the violent revolt, is also being held at the facility. Using the ventilation shafts, Snake succeeds in infiltrating the system and locating Anderson in his cell. He informs Snake of the location where Metal Gear REX is kept and the secret code that can be used to deactivate it, but dies of a heart attack immediately afterwards. Meryl, who was held captive in an adjoining cell, manages to escape and help Snake, who was discovered by the enemy soldiers, to escape. Then Snake finds Baker. While he tries to free him, he is confronted with Revolver Ocelot, who challenges Snake to a duel - but this is interrupted by a cyborg ninja who chops off Ocelot's right hand. Baker tells Snake about the Metal Gear project and advises him to contact Meryl, to whom he has given a PAL card that can be used to prevent the detonation of the nuclear bomb. After that, Baker dies, like the DARPA boss, of a sudden heart attack.

Snake contacts Meryl using a codec and agrees to meet her in the warhead storage hall, on condition that he be with Metal Gears engineer, Dr. Hal "Otacon" Emmerich speaks. On the way to the warehouse, Snake receives an encrypted codec call from an informant named "Deepthroat", who warns Snake of a tank attack. Snake is confronted with an M1 tank, controlled by Vulcan Raven, but manages to reach the warehouse. Snake finds Otacon in his laboratory, where he is opposed by the ninja, who, however, reveals himself to be his ally, Gray Fox, believed to be dead. Otacon and Snake team up. Using stealth technology, which makes Otacon more or less invisible, Otacon provides Snake with information and rations, while he himself can move relatively freely in the occupied base. Then Snake meets with Meryl, who gives him Baker's PAL card, but is then taken over by the powerful psychokinetic Psycho Mantis. Snake disarms the possessed Meryl and defeats Psycho Mantis in a duel, who reads Meryl's mind before his death and reveals to Snake that he has a "great place" in her heart. Immediately afterwards they are attacked by Sniper Wolf, who seriously wounded Meryl and captured Snake after a brief duel.

While in captivity, Liquid Snakes confirms suspicions that the two are twins. Then Snake is tortured by Ocelot - at this point the player decides whether he wants to give up or endure the torture. Snake is thrown into a cell where he finds Anderson's anemic body, which seems to have been decaying for days. Snake manages to escape from the cell and fights his way to the top of the communication tower of the facility, where he is attacked by Liquid in a Hind D helicopter, but is able to defeat it in battle. On the snow field adjacent to the tower, he is confronted again with Sniper Wolf, but this time he can kill them. She is bleeding to death in front of Otacon, who had developed romantic feelings for the terrorist. Nevertheless, Otacon continues to support Snake in his mission.

Right in front of REX's hangar, Vulcan Raven is waiting, who uses his shamanic powers to recognize that Snake is a clone. After a tough fight, Snake manages to defeat Raven too. Shortly before his death, Raven Snake reveals that the man who died before his eyes was not the DARPA boss but Decoy Octopus, another FOXHOUND member. Then Raven leaves a cryptic message that Snake has a violent future before he is devoured by his ravens.

In Metal Gears Hangar, Snake overhears Liquid and Ocelot as they prepare to ignite REX. Believing that this would actually switch him off, Snake accidentally activates Metal Gear REX with the PAL card. Liquid then reveals that he was Snake's ally Master Miller from the beginning of the mission and that the entire operation was orchestrated to have Snake activate the nuclear weapons. Liquid explains that he and Snake are a product of the Les Enfants Terribles project, a government attempt in the 1970s to clone Big Boss. While Snake received all of Big Boss' dominant genes, Liquid was given all of the recessive genes. Liquid also reveals the real reason for Snake's mission: As the carrier of the reprogrammed FoxDie virus, to kill all members of FOXHOUND so that the government can recover REX undamaged.

Liquid takes control of Metal Gear REX and attacks Snake. Gray Fox intervenes, destroys part of REX, but is subsequently trampled by the gigantic mecha. But with the help of Gray Fox, Snake succeeds in destroying REX and defeating Liquid in the ensuing duel. If the player persists in the torture sequence, Snake will then be reunited with Meryl; if he gives up, he'll meet Otacon again at this point. Then the two of them flee through a tunnel in jeeps, followed by Liquid. A collision occurs at the exit, after which Liquid, who has survived all fates so far, suddenly dies from the FoxDie virus. Campell, who was briefly deprived of control of the operation, can barely break off a nuclear strike on the base that was intended to cover up the day's events. He then has Snake pronounced dead to prevent the US government from looking for Snake in the future.

In a post-credit scene, it becomes apparent that Snake was the one with the recessive genes, while Liquid was actually genetically superior. Snake has an unknown time to live before FoxDie kills him. Ocelot is revealed as a double agent for the President of the United States. He was supposed to steal an optical disc from Baker that contained technical data about Metal Gear and kill anyone who got in his way - that was also the reason for the "accident" in which the DARPA boss was killed .

Gameplay

The player controls the protagonist Solid Snake in a 3D environment. A main goal is to move through the different areas as unnoticed as possible. There are various options available to the player, such as running, crawling and hiding. You can also lean the pawn against walls. Should you be discovered by the "enemies" anyway, an alarm goes off and a fight ensues. For this, the player has a selection of different weapons (mostly firearms) available, which he finds in the course of the game. The ammunition is limited and has to be renewed continuously. As long as the alarm is running, more and more opponents follow until the character can successfully hide for a while.

background

The protagonist was given the name Snake because, according to Kojima, the snake is the best living example of a being that can hide its presence and sneak without making a noise. A common assumption that the name refers to Snake Plisskin, the main character in The Rattlesnake , is therefore incorrect. However, Solid Snake also uses the code name Iroquois Pliskin in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty . Iroquois is derived from a word in the Algonquian language ( Iroqu ), which was used to designate the tribe of the Iroquois and mean rattlesnake .

Kojima gave several different reasons for adding the word “solid” to the game title. The existence of the predecessor titles is largely unknown outside of Japan and Kojima himself was not involved in Metal Gear 2 , but he wanted to make the reference to the predecessors clear, hence the expansion of the title. Solid is derived on the one hand from the main character Solid Snake, but at the same time refers to the mathematical meaning of the word in English (three-dimensional, spatial). Another reason was an allusion to the Japanese game developer Square ( Final Fantasy ), whose name stands for square and thus two-dimensionality, in the graphic sense, backwardness compared to spatial 3D.

Metal Gear Solid received positive reviews in the PlayStation version ( Metacritic : 94 out of 100).

“Metal Gear Solid is without a doubt one of the most impressive video games of all time. It has lived up to its demands in almost all respects and proves what incredible achievements the PlayStation and, above all, the Konami developers are capable of. The story is excellently constructed, the plan to offer an interactive feature film at the highest level could one day go down in video game annals as a pioneering achievement, especially since the pacifist message of the game is clearly emphasized and violence is condemned and not glorified. "

“As is well known, we named Zelda the best game of all time in the last edition , and Konami's Metal Gear Solid is now only a sliver behind it in second place in the all-time best list. This almost perfectly staged agent spectacle with its Oscar-like storyline is not just a simple reason to buy the PlayStation - no, it provides solid arguments to start the hobby of video games in the first place or to resume it if you have ever stopped. With other games it is easy to weigh up the pros and cons in an opinion box, but Metal Gear Solid is so uniquely ingenious in its overall composition that as a tester you cannot adequately dissect and appreciate the brilliant individual components in the limited space. "

- Ralph Karels : Video Games 3/99

“Five years from now, when we look back upon Metal Gear Solid, what will we see? The game is definitely revolutionary in many ways. It breaks new ground in gameplay and truly brings the video game one step closer to the realm of movies. It is, without a doubt, a landmark game. But the extreme ease with which it can be mastered and the game's insultingly short length keep it from perfection. Plus, do we really want games that are more like movies? If Hideo Kojima, the game's producer, was so set on this type of cinematic experience, he should really be making movies instead of games. While Metal Gear Solid currently stands alone, it stands as more of a work of art than as an actual game. It's definitely worth purchasing, but don't be surprised if you suddenly get extremely angry when you finish the game the day after you brought it home. "

This time Metal Gear is displayed in full polygonal form, and I used "Solid" to describe the cubic structure. Also, the "Solid" means to the third power mathematically. Also, most of the people don't know that there is a Metal Gear 1 and 2 for the MSX, and I wanted it to be the sequel for those. And, of course, Solid from Solid Snake. "
