Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater [ ˈmetl ɡɪə ˈsɒlɪd θriː sneɪk ˈiːtə ] is a computer game for the PlayStation 2 platform with action and stealth shooter game elements that was conceived by Hideo Kojima and developed by Konami . It was first published in 2004 (Japan, USA) and came to Europe in 2005. The game contains numerous new gameplay elements and has received frequent praise from the specialist press for its graphic implementation, plot and musical design. The game has been sold over four million times worldwide.

action

In this MGS title, you don't control the protagonist of the earlier games, Solid Snake , but your genetic father, who was sent to the Soviet Union under the code name Naked Snake in the 1960s during the Cold War . Snake is supposed to meet a Soviet scientist there who is developing a tank, the Shagohod , as a mobile, nuclear missile launching platform, and helping it to overflow. This mission is ultimately sabotaged by Snake's former mentor, The Boss , who defected to the GRU Colonel Volgin . He is in the sole possession of information on an enormous sum of money, distributed among several banks, which was amassed by an international war-mongering conspiracy during the Second World War; The Boss himself has joined him in an attempt to harm this conspiracy. Volgin takes the scientist and the unfinished Shagohod into custody and blows up the Soviet research facility in question with a Davy Crockett nuclear weapon that The Boss had previously given him as evidence of their overflow.

This attack is attributed to the United States by the Soviet Union. To de-escalate the situation, the CIA takes over the liquidation of The Boss and the renegade Volgin. This is again assigned to Snake, who survived his last mission with minor injuries. He is supported by the alleged KGB agent EVA , who goes under the name Tatyana as a lover of Volgins; in fact, it was set on Volgin's money by the Chinese People's Liberation Army . Snake infiltrates the base of Volgin, kills his followers one after the other and is captured when they meet on Volgin. During the subsequent torture, Snake loses his right eye, whereupon he is left incarcerated. He can break free and eventually, with EVA's support, kill Volgin. He later meets The Boss, who justifies her actions and tells of her warlike past. It turns out that she has not defected to the Soviet Union, but is still acting as a double agent on behalf of the US government. She was supposed to sneak into Volgin's staff to get at the legacy of the philosophers. As proof of her new loyalty, she handed him two nuclear warheads. However, when Volgin deployed one of these, The Boss had to take responsibility for it in order to exonerate the US from guilt and avert the threat of nuclear conflict. At the end of the ensuing battle, Snake kills her at her own request. This fight should also be the final test for Snake as the successor to The Boss. After completing the mission, he was given the honorary title of Big Boss by the American government .

Gameplay

Most of the time Snake spends stealthily in the jungle, which is reflected in the gameplay: A new display was introduced under the hit points : the stamina bar (stamina). This shows how much stamina the protagonist still has. If it disappears too much, the healing of wounds slows down, the stomach begins to growl and the hands begin to shake, making it difficult to aim accurately. To fill this bar again, Snake has to catch animals in the jungle. Animals that have been killed can only be kept in the player's inventory for a limited time. There are three cages available in which Snake can catch smaller animals alive. Alternatively, snake can also consume fruits, mushrooms, and the like, some of which are poisonous and consumption can affect their health.

In the jungle, Snake can be injured quickly, for example in a fire fight. This can result in cuts and gunshot wounds, which must then be selected via the remedy display and treated with suitable utensils (bandage, splint, knife, ...). If it falls deep, it can also cause severe fractures, among other things. Injuries are shown as red areas on the life meter and are very slowly restored by normal healing. In addition, permanent untreated injuries drain his stamina, which clears the stamina display faster.

Another new area is camouflage. In previous offshoots of the series, the protagonist usually had only one uniform, which never changed. In the jungle, however, Snake now has to camouflage himself in order to be as poorly visible to the enemy as possible. Various uniforms and face paints are available for this purpose, which must be used in a tactically correct manner depending on the environment (e.g. green camouflage in the jungle, brown or black in caves, etc.) in order to be able to use their camouflage effect. In addition, special camouflages can be obtained in certain situations in the game by z. B. empties the endurance bar of a boss, so defeated the boss with a stunning weapon instead of a normal weapon. For example, if you stun the boss, The Fury , a man thirsting for vengeance with a flame thrower and spacesuit, a fireproof camouflage suit. According to the same principle, you get a suit from other bosses that you can use to control hornets, a suit that you can use to regenerate life in the sun, a suit that you can use to drain the stamina of your enemies and more. In addition, more could be downloaded from the Konami server via the Internet. The current camouflage quality is displayed as a "camouflage index" in the HUD as a percentage, with 100% being the highest value.

In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater there are a total of eight bosses.

Ocelot
The here still young gunslinger Ocelot is already known from the two predecessors. He is the leader of a special unit and is known for his almost perfect handling of his revolvers. However, he uses a normal semi-automatic pistol at the beginning, but later in the game uses a revolver after Snake gives him the tip.
The pain
The Pain is a member of The Boss' Cobra unit. He is the master of all hornets, bees and wasps in the whole game. He has a large wasp nest on his back in which his "tamed" insects live. He can communicate with them easily. If you stun him, you get a camouflage suit with which you will be ignored by wasps, even if you destroy their nest. You can also get your own wasp basket by throwing a normal wasp's nest on the plateau on which The Pain stands before the fight and retrieving it later.
The Fear
Another member of the Cobra unit. He has a crossbow with poison and explosive arrows and a camouflage suit that makes him almost invisible and can only be seen with the thermal imaging device. Furthermore, he is a contortionist and can climb trees with ease. If you stun him, you get your camouflage suit, with which you get a camouflage index of 80%, but the suit drains stamina over time.
the end
The End is a man over 100 years old with outstanding stealth and sniper skills. At the beginning of the game he seems quite harmless because he is constantly sleeping in a wheelchair and hardly ever says a word. If you meet him in a fight, however, he develops tremendous strength and stamina through photosynthesis. As befits a sniper, he is a very patient comrade. In addition to the possibility of shooting him, you can take advantage of his extremely old age: If you hide for a few minutes, he falls asleep. If you take a break from the game for a week or if you set the console's system clock to the appropriate time, he will die of old age.
The Fury
This member is a former cosmonaut who had an accident during a space mission and suffered severe burns, which have tormented him since then. In the game he faces Snake with a flamethrower and a rocket backpack, which make him a dangerous opponent. However, due to his heavy equipment on the ground he is very slow and immobile, which can be his undoing in close combat.
The Sorrow
The Sorrow was a former member of the Cobra unit who had the ability to communicate with dead people. In 1962 he was killed by The Boss while on a mission. He can be discovered in several cut scenes when you switch to first person view. If you run into him in combat, he will send all the soldiers you killed in the course of the game at you and throw sound waves that cause nightmares. Any kind of attack is useless because he's already dead.
Volgin
Yevgeny Borisovitch Volgin, also known as Boris Volgin, Volgin, and Thunderbolt, is a GRU colonel and the game's main antagonist. He is able to deliver up to ten million volts with his body. His father stole the philosophers' legacy during World War II, which he now "manages". He also controls the Shagohod in the final battle.
The Joy
Better known as "The Boss", she is the leader of the Cobra unit. She was Snake's mentor and worked with him to develop the CQC hand-to-hand combat technique. She is an excellent fighter, who is characterized by speed, agility and effective CQC attacks. It is later learned that she and The Sorrow were a couple and that Ocelot is their son. This is what you find out when you contact Eva at a certain point in the story. She says that during a great battle, Ocelot was born in the middle of the battlefield, his mother has a serpentine scar on her stomach, and his father is dead. At the end of the story, The Boss also tells how she killed The Sorrow, gave birth to her son on the battlefield, and shows the serpentine scar on her body.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence

MGS 3: Subsistence [ səˈbsɪstəns ] is a revised edition of Snake Eater .

  • The first DVD (name: Subsistence ) contains the original game, which has been expanded to include a higher level of difficulty, a freely adjustable viewing angle of the game and the so-called duel mode; In the latter, the player can go straight into a fight against one of the game's boss opponents.
  • The second DVD (Name: Persistence ) contains the biggest innovation: In online mode ( Metal Gear Online ) a maximum of eight people could compete against each other at the same time. The servers required for this mode were shut down by Konami when Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots , which includes Metal Gear Online 2 , was released. There are also additional fun scenes on the DVD, which parody the plot ( Secret Theater ), as well as adapted versions of the first two games of the original Metal Gear series: Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake for the MSX computer . There is also a mode called "Snake vs. Apes", which is not meant to be taken seriously, in which you can hunt monkeys with Solid Snake under time pressure.
  • The third DVD (Name: Existence ), which was only released in a limited version outside of Europe, contains all the cutscenes of the game, which were cut together with new scenes to form an independent film. According to Hideo Kojima, this is intended for people who found the game too difficult and who therefore never saw the end.

Extras and Easter Eggs

  • So- called kerotans are hidden throughout the game . These are toy frogs that appear in various Metal Gear games. If you shoot them, they give a loud croak. If you find and shoot at all of the Kerotan hidden in the game, you will receive the stealth camouflage uniform at the end of the game.
  • On very rare occasions in the game you can find a tsuchinoku , a snake-like mythical creature from Japanese legend. If you catch them alive and keep them in your inventory until the end of the game, you will receive the infinity face paint after playing through, which grants unlimited ammunition for the equipped weapon.
  • The u. U. very long boss fight against The End can be next to the above. Also avoid the possibility of the game pause completely by shooting him from a distance during a cutscene. After that, however, the actual fight no longer takes place, which also makes it impossible to capture his camouflage uniform.
  • If you shoot Ocelot after the first fight, the game ends automatically with "Game Over". Such an action would result in a paradox of time , since Ocelot plays a central role in the action of the later parts of the series, which is pointed out in the form of an indignant tirade from Colonel Campbell, who reports from the future.
  • If you save immediately after being tortured by Volgin, quit the game and switch off the console, you will find yourself in a playable nightmare the next time you load the savegame. You no longer play Snake, but an unknown character who fights through waves of undead and monsters. This sequence called "Guy Savage" and its gameplay very similar to the Devil May Cry series served as a demo for a hack and slay game by Konami that was ultimately not released .
  • In the course of the game you meet a certain Major Ivan Raidenovich Raikov, whose uniform the player steals and uses to infiltrate a base. This looks very similar to the protagonist Raiden from Sons of Liberty and apparently has a homosexual relationship with the main antagonist Volgin. In fact, Raikov is a parody of Raiden, who was particularly unpopular with Western fans of the series. The patronymic Raidenovich suggests that his father might have carried the name Raiden. There is also a poster of Raiden in his locker.

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D

Snake Eater 3D is a port of Metal Gear Solid 3 for the Nintendo 3DS. This uses the stereoscopic display for 3D representation and the touchscreen to display information such as B. a card or for quick access to z. B. Backpack and radio. It is also possible to use the cameras of the 3DS to photograph patterns for camouflage. The Kerotan have been removed from the game and, since this is a Nintendo game, replaced with Yoshis .

HD Remaster & Remake

Snake Eater was also re-released in its expanded form as part of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection released in 2012 for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 , which, in addition to this, also includes the offshoots Peace Walker and Substance (expanded version of Sons of Liberty ) in revised image and Sound quality included. However, this version no longer contained the online mode (the servers were already switched off), the mini-games "Snake vs. Apes", "Guy Savage" and the Secret Theater.

In addition, a version for the Japanese pachinko game machine that is completely based on the current graphics standard was announced. However, since the pachinko is not an arcade machine in the classic sense, but rather is to be understood as a kind of slot machine with game themes, it is not a fully playable remake. Rather, playing on the slot machine influences the scenery on the screen.
