Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is an action game in the world of the Metal Gear computer game series . It was developed on behalf of the Japanese publisher Konami by the Japanese developer Platinum Games and was released in February 2013 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 . It was also released for Windows and Mac OS in 2014, and for Android in 2016 . The player controls Raiden, the main character from Metal Gear Solid 2 , who fights as a technically enhanced cyborg against the private military company Desperado Enforcement. In contrast to the main series, which attaches importance to sneaking and clandestine action, action-packed battles are in the foreground in Revengeance . The game was originally under the title Metal Gear Solid: Rising under development internally at Kojima Productions , but was initially put on hold due to development problems.

action

The action takes place around four years after the events in Metal Gear Solid: Guns of the Patriots . Raiden works for the private military company Maverick Security Consulting, on whose behalf he is supposed to protect N'mani, the prime minister of an unspecified African country. The convoy is ambushed by soldiers from the Desperado Enforcement military company and N'mani is kidnapped. Raiden pursues the mercenaries, but cannot prevent the death of his protégé. In battle he is defeated by the mercenary leaders Sundowner and Sam, losing an arm and his left eye. These are replaced by cyborg technology and after his recovery, Raiden goes on a search for the reasons and the people behind the attack on N'mani. As usual for the series, he encounters a web of corruption and conspiracy. The locations are Abkhazia , Mexico and a corporate headquarters in Denver.

Raiden is controlled directly by the player, with the game being shown from a third-person perspective . The game consists of eight largely linearly structured levels in which the fights against different opponents at a high game speed are in the foreground. The combat system essentially consists of two different combat attacks (strong / weaker), which can be combined with block maneuvers to form different attack combinations. A special feature is the blade mode, in which the time is greatly slowed down and the analog stick can be used to determine at which point Raiden should strike with his katana. Weak spots can be targeted, hindering opponents, collecting bonuses and recharging Raiden's energy reserves. Points are awarded for the fight design, with which the player can upgrade raids between missions.

development

At E3 2009 Kojima officially announced the development of an offshoot called Metal Gear Solid: Rising . It was supposed to fill the narrative gap between Sons of Liberty and Guns of the Patriots . Internally, Kojima took a step back from the development and left the responsibility to a team of young developers. However, due to inadequate leadership and increasing design flaws, the project began to stagnate, so Kojima had development discontinued. However, since he did not simply want to discard the existing framework, he looked for external support and turned to his friend, game producer Atushi Inaba from Platinum Games. At the Spike Video Game Awards 2011 Kojima finally announced the handover of the project to Platinum Games and the name change to Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance . For the tight schedule, Platinum switched to its in-house engine instead of the Konami Fox engine that was originally used. Kojima Productions made no specifications and only supervised the plot, the cutscenes and the scenario. The plot was postponed to Guns of the Patriots .

reception

On average, Metal Gear Rising received a good rating. Metacritic determines an average rating of 80% for PS3, 82% for Xbox 360 and 83% for Windows.

“This is exactly where the essence and goal of Metal Gear Rising can be found: Revengeance. I've heard a lot of people complain about a short four to five hour playing time. [...] Games like Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance want to be played through and defeated several times. Every fight teaches you new subtleties and you grow with the increasing challenges. If you long for it and found the last Devil May Cry way too easy, you can leave everything on the spot, buy this game and bury your mobile phone and your diary in the garden. You won't miss them. "

- Björn Balg : Eurogamer

"The katana action is merciless and fits well into the Metal Gear universe, but shows weaknesses in detail."

- Mathias Oertel : 4Players
