Ren'ai simulations are a sub-genre of the Ren'ai games ( 恋愛 ゲ ー ム , ren'ai gēmu ), the aim of which is to build a love relationship with one of several game characters . Ren'ai simulations are also known as Dating Sims (short for dating simulation ) outside of Japan . Just like the term visual novel , however, the term is often used across the board for all Ren'ai games, regardless of whether they have a simulation character or not. In fact, very few Ren'ai games are also Ren'ai simulations; by far the largest part make up Ren'ai adventures . The confusion is due to the same goal of the game - building a romantic relationship with mostly female characters - and the same appearance - mostly fuel-based graphics in the anime style. However, both genres differ in game mechanics. In Ren'ai Adventures, the course of the game is generally changed by the player's answers to given questions, with new branches opening up in the story path.

In contrast, with Ren'ai simulations, certain parameters need to be improved in order to advance the game. On the one hand, these can be attributes of the protagonist such as appearance, intelligence, sportiness and money. In order to come into contact with a girl or to develop it further, depending on the girl's character type, the player must now buy new things, learn repeatedly, do sports or work in order to improve them above a certain threshold value. On the other hand, the player has to show interest in her by talking to the girl as often as possible, whereupon her game parameter of affection for the protagonist improves. After the protagonist has won the girl's heart, he can see a sex scene with her in many games "as a reward". Such games are then also eroge .

A smaller proportion of Ren'ai games are otome games - games designed for the target group of young women or girls - with girls as protagonists and boys as objects of love interest; or boys love games ( ボ ー イ ズ ラ ブ ゲ ー ム bōizu rabu gēmu ) - also for the female target group, but with homosexual, male lovers.
