Street Fighter II (ス ト リ ー ト フ ァ イ タ ー II, Sutorīto Faitā Tsū ) is a popular Japanese arcade game from Capcom . It is the most successful and best-known part of the game series of the same name . After the initial release on the Capcom Play System in February 1991, Street Fighter II has been ported to various platforms over the decades and reissued several times.

Development history

The arcade game Street Fighter (ス ト リ ー ト フ ァ イ タ ー, Sutorīto Faitā ) from 1987 already had some features of the successor. So it was a 2D fighting game in which two fighters fight each other in front of an exotic backdrop and you as a player could use certain key combinations to use special attacks such as fireballs or special hits. In the early 1990s, the two developers Akira Nishitani and Akira Yasuda began developing Street Fighter II , incorporating features from Final Fight (1989) in addition to elements from the predecessor . Until the completion of the game, which was one of the first to use the Capcom Play System , the management of Capcom was in the dark about what kind of game should be created.

For the first time, the player could choose between several game characters in a fighting game. Each of these had their own fighting style and different maneuvers. A lot of space was also given to working out the background story and characters. The graphics, controls and playability, which were excellent for the time, received a lot of praise.

All games in the series initially appeared as arcade machines . This version was then followed by other implementations, with sometimes more, sometimes less big differences. The respective new versions were all based on the same gameplay, but added some new features such as faster (or adjustable) game speed, more fighters, new "moves", a rechargeable move bar and new artwork .

The Street Fighter II series was later followed by the Street Fighter Alpha and Street Fighter III series, which steered the series in other directions. Therefore, only the game Street Fighter IV (2008) by Capcom is considered a legitimate successor.

Due to its success, a number of updated versions have been released with additional features and characters. Street Fighter II is considered to be one of the best video games of all time and, in particular, the most important and influential fighting game ever made. Its launch is seen as a revolutionary moment within its genre; it is said to have popularized the fighting genre in the 1990s, inspired other producers to create their own fighting series, and triggered a renaissance for the arcade game industry.

Others

  • When Street Fighter II was released in the US, the names of three characters were changed from the Japanese original. In order to avoid a legal dispute with the real boxer Mike Tyson , who could see some parallels between himself and the character boxer, the following names were exchanged: Vega became M. Bison , Balrog became Vega and M. Bison became Balrog.
  • The 1993 feature film City Hunter with Jackie Chan contains a scene in which Jackie Chan fights against his film opponent Gary Daniels and both slip into the role of various street fighters . Gary Daniels plays a surprisingly real Ken , while Jackie Chan slips into the role of E. Honda (e.g. Chun Li) . However, this is called E. Honde there , because Mitsubishi , at that time sponsor of Jackie Chan, wanted to avoid mentioning the competitor Honda .
