Conker's Bad Fur Day ( CBFD ) is a video game from the British development company Rare for the Nintendo 64 console that was released in 2001.

In 2001 Bad Fur Day received an award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in the Interactive category for its acoustic design .

development

Conker was first introduced as a playable character in Diddy Kong Racing . Also in the 1999 Game Boy game Conker's Pocket Tales , Conker was presented as absolutely child-friendly. Conker's Bad Fur Day was actually supposed to be launched under the name Conker's Quest , and later as Twelve Tales - Conker 64 . When the game was first introduced to the press, however, the reviews were worse than expected. The general tenor was that enough games for children and with child-friendly themes had already appeared on the Nintendo 64. Rare then redesigned the entire game and shocked the public with a new version that was the exact opposite of its predecessor. Conker had become a drunk who gets drunk with his friends at night in the bar and molested innocent people. He neglects his girlfriend Berri and makes many enemies. The game contains references to films such as The Matrix , Saving Private Ryan , A Clockwork Orange (introductory scene at the beginning of a new game) and Bram Stoker's Dracula .

Game content

Conker had another night of drinking in the pub. The next morning he wakes up a long way from home and finds that he was lost on the way home in a drunkenness. From then on he went looking for his house.

Between him and his home, however, stands King Panther with his army of teddy bears, called "Tediz". As a passionate milk consumer, he was not at all pleased when the foremost leg of his table broke. The lock doctor decided that a red squirrel had to be caught to fix the table. The description of the doctor fitted exactly to Conker, who from now on was well known and wanted.

On his way home Conker encounters many bizarre characters, such as the "Great Mighty Poo" (a singing pile of dung), smoking fire ants, blue-blooded catfish and a drinking king bee who has left his wife because of a busty sunflower.

Gameplay

Conker controls itself like a classic action adventure. You move Conker freely through the individual areas, he can jump and duck. A special feature are special events and scripts that Conker can trigger at fixed points that are marked as a large B-button circle. In the disco level he has to z. B. move a large ball by urinating on it and in Dracula's castle he transforms into a bat to escape the deadly traps. The game relies more on trial & error moments. The player is presented with a challenge without being told by the game beforehand what to do. He has to try to find out how to solve the situation.

Multiplayer mode

Conker's Bad Fur Day offers an extensive multiplayer mode for up to four players and with seven different games: Beach, Raptor, Heist, Death Match, War, Tank and Race. Each mode has its own level. Beach is a form of "storming the castle". Two teams compete against each other. The "Tediz" guard a castle that has several entrances. The "Frenchis", French squirrels, try to get into given entrances to the fortress. The Frenchis are unarmed, while the Tediz have an arsenal of weapons at their disposal. The appearance of the level is based heavily on Omaha Beach . In Raptor, a 2-player mode, the players control two raptors that have to feed a baby dinosaur. They have to watch out for cavemen who try to steal the dinosaur eggs. In Heist, four teams have to rob a bank and bring the money from the central vault to the starting point without suffering any damage themselves. The bank robbers named after their colors are a clear allusion to Reservoir Dogs . Death Match is a classic "everyone against everyone" mode that includes all of the game's weapons. The mode has several multiplayer cards. War can either be Team Deathmatch or Capture the Flag. Team Deathmatch consists of two teams competing against each other. The team that eliminated the most opposing members at the end of the round wins. In Capture the Flag, the teams have to storm the enemy base and bring a flag placed there into their own base. If the flag bearer is hit, he loses the flag again. Race takes up an element of the solo player mode. Here two players compete against each other on a hoverboard . They can shoot at each other and have to dodge obstacles that are deadly in a collision.

On the Microsoft Xbox in 2005 one appeared remake of the game called Conker: Live & Reloaded . The name is derived from the online service, Xbox Live , as the game (in contrast to the N64 original) can be played in online mode via Xbox Live; you can play with up to 16 players over the Internet. However, the multiplayer versions of the original are no longer included, but Live & Reloaded contains a completely newly developed online mode that can also be played via LAN . In addition, the remake comes up with translated, albeit more censored, screen texts and greatly improved graphics.
