Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island ( Japanese ス ー パ ー マ リ オ ヨ ッ シ ー ア イ ラ ン ド Sūpā Mario Yosshī Airando ) is a game developed and published by Nintendo in 1995 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System . In 2002, an adaptation for the Game Boy Advance called Yoshi's Island was released: Super Mario Advance 3 ( ス ー パ ー マ リ オ ア ド バ ン ス 3 , Sūpā Mario Adobansu 3 ).

action

The action of the game takes place at the time when Super Mario and other main characters, like his brother Luigi or Bowser, were still babies .

A stork is supposed to bring the two babies Mario and Luigi to their parents in one night. Suddenly Kamek, a magicoopa on a witch's broom, hisses up to him and grabs Luigi. Mario falls into the depths on the back of a green Yoshi who, with his friends, decides to help the child.

When Kamek is back at his master Bowser's castle, he notices that one of the babies is missing. He sends his helpers to catch Mario too.

With the help of a map lying next to Baby Mario, the Yoshis organize a relay race through six different areas of Yoshi Island and then finally come to Bowser's realm to free Baby Luigi from Kamek's clutches. In every 4th and 8th level the player has to compete against a boss.

Game mechanics

The game mechanics differs from that of the direct predecessor Super Mario World and other platformer of the time. It is particularly noticeable that Yoshi is invulnerable to most opponents and only loses Baby Mario when he comes into contact with the enemy. This must then be quickly caught again before he is kidnapped by Kamek's assistants. In this game there is no time limit outside of losing Baby Mario.

The player controls almost exclusively the different colored Yoshis, but they all have the same skills. Nevertheless, there are golden stars in some places with which Baby Mario can be controlled for a short time. He is invulnerable and can run along all walls and ceilings. In addition, there are bubbles in certain locations that, if touched, will transform Yoshi into another shape such as a helicopter, submarine or car for a limited time.

Eggs are a key element. Yoshi can carry up to six at a time. The eggs represent Yoshi's projectiles with which he can shoot opponents, but also collect extras or flip switches. There are several different types of eggs in the game: The green eggs are the standard type. They are also the only ones that Yoshi can produce himself. Yellow eggs are created when a green egg bounces off a wall or other obstacle. If a yellow egg hits an opponent or a certain object such as a question mark cloud , a yellow coin appears . A red egg will reveal two stars, and a blinking egg will result in a red coin . Red eggs are created when a yellow egg hits a wall or other obstacle. Flashing eggs can only be found in specially designated locations. Green, yellow, and red eggs can also be found in colored blocks. Blocks for green eggs can be used infinitely, but those for yellow and red eggs can only be used once. Green Eggs can Yoshi by the swallowing of most, but not all, opponents determined to be. To do this, however, he has to lick her up first .

However, not only eggs can be used as ammunition by Yoshi, but also licked up opponents.

The game world consists of six different areas with eight levels each. In every fourth and eighth level of an area the player has to compete against a boss.

A high score is calculated for each level completed. This is 50% from collected flowers , 20% from red coins and 30% from collected stars. These stars also serve as a counter for the time the player has to recapture Baby Mario if Yoshi is lost to an injury. When 100% has been achieved in all eight levels of a game world, an extra level and a bonus game are available.

Yoshi loses a life if he comes into contact with lava or with spikes (in the previous game Mario was only wounded by spikes and became little Mario), falls into an abyss, is crushed by a wall, is swallowed by a certain fish, baby Mario does not win back in the allotted time after the loss or is pressed off the screen in an auto-scrolling level.

reception

Due to the excellent playability and the ingenious level design, the game received top ratings throughout and is still considered the best platformer of all time by many players. The video games popular at the time rated the game in its 9/95 issue with 97%, which was the highest rating ever given. Tetsuhiko "Tet" Hara, one of the responsible testers, concluded his comment with the words "... this game almost borders on a miracle!" The editorial team of the video game magazine “ Total! “Awarded the grade 1+ for the first time.

Technical

A memory module for up to three games is integrated in the game module. These can be copied or deleted in the main menu.

Furthermore, a Super FX chip is built into the game module in order to be able to display simple 3D effects for which the internal CPU and PPU of the Super Nintendo are too weak. An example of these effects is the background of the main menu, which depicts the Yoshi island or later Bowser's empire, or the intro sequence. Three-dimensional objects are also occasionally used in the game, for example rotating bars. As a result, Yoshi's Island was one of the first Super Nintendo platformers to offer simple 3D effects that were part of the level design.

New edition

In 2002 the game was re-released for the Game Boy Advance as Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 . In addition to 6 additional levels, like all games in the Super Mario Advance series, it also contains the game Mario Bros.

As part of the Nintendo Ambassador Program, it was made available to first-time buyers of the Nintendo 3DS free of charge as a virtual console title.
