Super Mario Maker ( Japanese original title: ス ー パ ー マ リ オ メ ー カ ー , short: SMM ) is a level editor - video game from Nintendo that was released exclusively for the Wii U on September 11, 2015 . This title marks the 30th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. Series celebrated.

The game was initially presented under the working title Mario Maker at E3 2014 and finally as Super Mario Maker at E3 2015 .

Unlike previous Super Mario -Play the player has the option of virtually all typical elements of the most popular 2D platformers Run to build games from Super Mario to use and own levels, which then also online by other users can be played and downloaded. There is also the possibility of using elements in a way that has not existed in previous games. The creator of levels can e.g. B. Place enemies that normally only appear in overworld levels under water or stack them on top of each other. According to Nintendos, the game contains more than 60 different ready-made sample levels, one of which is from Michel Ancel , the creator of the Rayman series of games.

So far (as of October 2015) over 3.3 million levels have been created and uploaded worldwide.

Gameplay

The game has different starting points for level design. The game features four different graphic designs from the original Super Mario games that can be switched between:

In addition, the player can choose between different backgrounds. So levels can be built above ground, underground, haunted house, as a fortress or under water. The background can be switched between the two levels.

The player or level designer starts with a basic version with a graphic style, a background and some elements that can be used. Additional features will be activated in the course of construction. In the game there are certain mechanics that influence the design, e.g. For example, by shaking an element or opponent with the stylus on the gamepad, their behavior and / or appearance can be changed, so that, for example, a Koopa with a green armor becomes one with a red armor, which, unlike the former, turns around on precipices instead of falling down. There is also a so-called “10 Mario Challenge”, in which the sample levels supplied by Nintendo can be unlocked and played.

In online mode, levels created by other players can be played, rated and commented on yourself. Every user can give a star to online levels that they particularly like . The levels that have the best ratio of stars to played users are included in the so-called star ranking . However, a certain number of stars must be achieved for this. The star ranking is available for four levels of difficulty (easy, medium, difficult and very difficult) and for regional and global levels.

In addition, in the so-called "100 Mario Challenge", other players can play randomly selected levels. At the beginning of this challenge, the player has 100 attempts and must complete all 16 levels ( 6 levels for very difficult difficulty ). You can choose from four different levels of difficulty. These are gradually unlocked as soon as a player masters the challenge in the previous difficulty level.

With a free software update released on November 5th, Nintendo added more familiar game elements from the Super Mario Bros. -Series one: Since then it has been possible to place up to two reset points per level, one per level area. In addition, the power-ups stored in the blocks can in future be tailored more individually if desired. In addition, a new category followed with the event level , in which levels of "well-known independent companies" are created and published in which, among other things, new amiibo costumes are used. There are also levels of official Nintendo builder. These are, for example, offered by gameplay elements such as the eraser and the dog, which is the undo function in build mode, instead of players.

Special Editions

In July 2015, Nintendo announced that the game would be available for release in three packages: the Artbook Edition with the game and a book about the game; the amiibo + Artbook Edition with game, book and the classic 8-bit Mario Amiibo figure from the Super Mario 30th Anniversary Collection ; and the Super Mario Maker Wii U Premium Pack , which includes a Wii U console, the game, the book and the Mario Amiibo figure.

Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS

In December 2016, a version for the Nintendo 3DS was released in the form of Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS . The online mode was omitted here, otherwise it's the same game.

successor

On February 13, 2019, Nintendo released a trailer for the game Super Mario Maker 2 , which was released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch in June 2019 , which, among other innovations, contains a new Super Mario 3D World graphic style. As announced by Nintendo in April 2019, the game would be released on June 28, 2019.

Costumes and style-specific items

With the? Mushroom, Mario can transform himself into other characters in the Nintendo universe. Currently the number of available costumes is 143, if you don't include the random costume. You can unlock these costumes in different ways. Some are available from the start, while others can be obtained by completing the 100 Mario Challenge on certain difficulty levels. Still others can only be obtained by completing an event level published by Nintendo. If there is an amiibo for a character , you can unlock his costume by scanning the amiibo. New costumes (mostly together with an event level) are regularly added through free updates.

Since there is no style-specific power-up in Super Mario Bros. , in contrast to all other available styles, the? Mushroom has been added and is accordingly exclusive to the Super Mario Bros. style. Here is a list of the style-specific items:
