New Super Mario Bros. Wii is one of the game developers Nintendo developed platformers Run - video game , which was released in Germany on November 20 of 2009. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii , as in the predecessor New Super Mario Bros., which was released for the Nintendo DS , the classic game principle of the first Super Mario Bros. for the NES is taken up again, hence the name New in the title.

    Game plot

The plot of the game in New Super Mario Bros. Wii revolves around saving Princess Peach from a huge, anthropomorphic turtle named Bowser , as in most Super Mario games . In New Super Mario Bros. Wii , Peach is kidnapped by Bowser Jr. and the seven Koopalingen who were up to mischief in Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World . To save her, Mario travels through eight worlds, each with about eight to ten levels. In every world there is a castle and a palace. At the end of each castle or palace level there is a boss . After simply playing through the game for the first time, a ninth world is unlocked in which a bonus level can be contested per world if the player has collected all the golden star coins in the respective world. These can also be used to watch films in Peach's castle that show solutions to difficult game situations.

    Game mechanics

The basic game mechanics of the game are classic 2D in side perspective, but still have 3D elements thanks to the 3D engine . The game is played with the "Wiimote" , the remote control of the Wii . This is held parallel and horizontally to the ground and the control pad is used to walk to the right or left. Use the 1 key to run and the 2 key to jump. If you shake the Wiimote, the character makes a twisting jump. It is also possible to play with the combination of Wiimote and Nunchuk . The Z and B buttons replace the 1 button, the A button the 2 button and the analog stick the control pad. The motion control is still taken over by the Wiimote. For the first time there is also a multiplayer mode that allows up to four players to take part in the story mode at the same time. There are some new elements especially for this, for example one player can carry the other, or if a pawn falls into a hole or is defeated by an opponent, it comes into a kind of bubble that can be burst by another player to protect the defeated player Rescue player. In the multiplayer mode you can choose between the following protagonists: Mario (1st player is automatically Mario), Luigi and a blue or yellow Toad.

At first, characters like Princess Peach or Wario were considered. But this would have required an independent game physics of the characters, like the gliding flight of Princess Peach or a bump or fart attack by Wario. The decision was made for the Toads because they have a similar game behavior as Mario and Luigi and they wanted to present every player with the same gaming experience.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is Nintendo's first game with the new Super Guide function. The Super Guide helps the player if he has died eight times in one place. Upon request, a computer-controlled Luigi will appear and show the player the way through the level, the player can take over at any point and finish the level himself. At the end of a level that has been completed by the Super Guide (in the game Super Assistant ), the player can decide for himself whether the level should be saved or whether he would like to play through it himself.

In this game, as in the DS version, there is an inventory, but this is designed differently than before. Now, power-ups from the inventory can no longer be selected at will in the level; this must already happen on the world map. For this, however, the player can carry any number of power-ups with him. These power-ups can be won in mini-games against opponents on the world map or in memory games in mushroom houses.

The level of difficulty of the game is generally higher than in other games in the Super Mario series.

    Power-ups

Power-ups are items that enable the character to transform or improve in the short term.

    Classic power-ups

    Super mushroom

Mario becomes Super Mario, can crush blocks of walls and can take more damage.

    Fire flower

The player grows up and can throw fireballs. In addition, after receiving damage, it does not become small again, but goes into the same state as the one triggered by the super mushroom.

    Ice flower

The player grows tall as with the fire flower, but can throw ice balls instead of fireballs, which can freeze most of all opponents. Frozen enemies can be picked up and thrown at other enemies depending on their size. The same effect after damage as with the fire flower.

    Green mushroom (1UP mushroom)

The player receives an extra life.

    Mini mushroom

The player becomes very small, can run faster, jump higher and much further and walk over water. He can also crawl into special tubes that reveal hidden paths. If he takes damage in this state, he is instantly defeated.

    star

The player becomes invulnerable for a short time and defeats most opponents just by touch. If a player in multiplayer mode with a star cancels a player without a star, the effect of the star is transferred to the other player.

    New power-ups

    Propeller mushroom

The player grows tall and can fly for a short time after making a twist jump. The same effect after damage as with the fire flower.

    Penguin suit

The player slips into a penguin suit. As a result, it moves safely on icy surfaces, swims faster through water and can slide over ice and water on its stomach. As with the ice flower, it is possible to freeze opponents. The same effect after damage as with the fire flower.

    Yoshi

If the player sits on Yoshi, he can perform a flutter jump to get to higher places or use his long tongue to eat opponents. In addition, it can be used as a stepping stone when stepping off it during a jump. There are Yoshis in different colors, but they all have the same abilities. The player automatically descends from the Yoshi at the end of a level and cannot take it to the next level.

    Hidden exits

In some levels - in addition to the normal level exit - another alternative exit is hidden. These exits are marked by a red flag on the flagpole and enable further routes to be activated on the level map. For example, shortcuts, hidden levels or warp cannons can be unlocked. With these cannons the player can be catapulted into other worlds and thus skip essential parts of the game. The use of such cannons is especially popular in speed runs to save time playing through New Super Mario Bros. Wii .

Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii is a free modification ( homebrew / fangame ) based on Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros. Wii , which was released on August 8, 2013 by hobby developers of the Newer Team .

To play "Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii", the original New Super Mario Bros. Wii disc is required as a base. The modification will be distributed as a fan patch with significant content of its own (file size 535  MB ). The distribution as a binary patch with only material from the fan developers avoids a copyright infringement which would represent a combined distribution of the original work and adaptation. This fan game version was developed as a hack based on the published binary version by Nintendo, i.e. without access to the source code and development tools of the original developers.

    Adjustments

The Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii includes from the original alongside 128 new levels, are extending small in nine large (1 to 9) and five (A to E) worlds, even a brand new fully coherent world map, new bosses and other music . In addition, various concepts have been reinserted that Nintendo used earlier in the series but were missing in New Super Mario Bros. Wii , namely the hammer power-up from Super Mario Bros. 3 and the switch palaces from Super Mario World , the blocks appear in levels. These can simplify the level or allow the player to achieve star coins that they would otherwise not be able to get at. While the hammer power-up was completely new built into the game, a switch palace already made a brief appearance in New Super Mario Bros. Wii . Also new are some features like a lower gravity in a space world.

The star coins now also have a different purpose; they can now be used to buy power-ups for inventory in special shops. Inventory power-ups can also be obtained from Challenge Houses and Music Houses . In the former, a certain number of stars must be collected in order to receive 3 power-ups, in the latter, however, a player has to play a melody played for him on music blocks, for which he can receive up to four power-ups.

    Development and publication

The development of Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii began in early 2010. The game should initially appear in late 2011, but the release was delayed by a year and a half. Once released, the hack received positive mention in major online video game magazines .
