The Alexanders (or Alexanders ) was a band in the GDR . Some of the musicians later merged into the band Panta Rhei , which in turn is considered to be the predecessor group of Karat .

Band history

The Alexanders were founded in 1967. Founding member Alexander Schilling was the band's leader and trombonist. At the same time he acted as the namesake of the band. Among other things, the musicians Reinhard Lakomy , Uve Schikora , Andreas Andy Altenfelder , Johannes Lemke (drums) and guitarist Johannes Hansi Biebl played with the Alexanders in the initial phase of its existence . In 1969 the wind group consisted of four wind players.

The singer and guitarist Herbert Dreilich and the keyboardist Ulrich Ed Swillms joined the Alexanders in 1969. Bass guitarist Henning Protzmann followed a year later. The band played melodic rock in the style of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSN & Y), partly also blues , soul and jazz rock . 1969 appeared with the jazz rock piece Honigmond, the only title of the Alexander on GDR records. In 1970 the titles Hope , Nachts und September were produced by the radio of the GDR . Hope is a German-language adaptation of the CSN&Y title Helplessly Hoping , Nachts is clearly based on Tim Hardin's If I Were a Carpenter .

In 1971 Dreilich, Protzmann, Swillms and Lemke split off to form the band Panta Rhei. Before that, the Alexanders had often appeared as a backing band for pop singer Karin Maria, who was Alexander Schilling's wife. In the same year, the Alexanders re- formed as a big band and played together until they were dissolved in the late 1970s.

aftermath

The title Nachts was re-recorded by Panta Rhei with Veronika Fischer as the singer. Dreilich, Protzmann and Swillms were later among the founders of Karat, one of the most successful bands in GDR music history.
