Buschfunk is the name of a music publisher based in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg . The company, founded in 1989, had an estimated annual turnover of over two million euros in 2004 with five employees.

history

On December 13, 1989, the day on which the pioneer birthday was celebrated in the GDR , the Buschfunk was originally founded as an “artist's office”. The company now operates as Buschfunk-Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH , with Klaus Koch as managing director, in Rodenbergstrasse in Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin. Klaus Koch is a studied cultural scientist and former director of the Leipzig student club Moritzbastei .

Buschfunk was the first independent music publisher in the GDR and has so far maintained its independence as a music publisher in East Germany. This is due, among other things, to the fact that in the early years there was no cooperation partner to be found who wanted to support the German-language music of the East.

Thanks to the willingness of the artists and the loyalty of the music audience, the publisher has made a name for itself in the field of German-language music.

Since 1990 the publisher has issued over a hundred publications, some of which have won national prizes and awards. In addition to the music productions on CD and DVD, the publisher publishes songbooks, for example by Gerhard Gundermann , Keimzeit and Stoppok, and organizes over 1,500 concerts . Since 2002, however, the proportion of concerts organized by Buschfunk has decreased in favor of publishing and sales.

The distribution of the music productions is also realized through the connected independent direct shipping to meanwhile more than 4,000 CD shops and markets, bookshops and libraries in Germany as well as by mail order and via mail order companies.

In addition to its own productions, Buschfunk now also sells third-party productions such as the CDs from the Puhdys' own labels and from Petra Zieger , the musical legacy of Rio Reiser , the David Volksmund Production catalog , the Ton Steine Scherben label and the Russendisko Records , the in-house one Label by Wladimir Kaminer and Gurzhy . Distribution was expanded through agreements with distributors in Switzerland and Austria.

In the meantime, Buschfunk became famous for the publication of GDR games. The first game like this was overtaking without catching up . It has been sold in over 200,000 copies so far.

Buschfunk has been sending out its mail order catalog since 1993. Since 2001, the offer can also be used via the internet shop. The offer mainly includes music , films , videos and games from eastern Germany, but also from the former socialist countries, such as the Red Guitars or Zsuzsa Koncz .

15th anniversary

On the occasion of the company's 15th anniversary, Buschfunk organized a birthday concert on December 13, 2004 in the Berlin Theater des Westens . At the concert, which lasted over 5 hours, artists were represented who are certainly not only known in East Germany, but above all there. ( see also : Appendix ).

On December 15, 2004, the Tagesspiegel published in its print edition about a review by HP Daniels under the heading: Was that a wonderful time. This is what the East sounds like: 15 years of BuschFunk:

“Westerners feel strange in the sold-out theater of the West. In the backdrop of “Les Misérables”, between piled barricades , “L'art de passage” plays, a pleasant combo between classical , folk and jazz . 'It was a wonderful time, everyone was ready to riot,' sing Engerling . Cheers from the auditorium. The musicians don't have to be announced. Everyone is recognized immediately, frenetically celebrated. Who is that now Uschi Brüning , she sings jazz bliss. And the one in the green shirt and the Telecaster? He sings about hard times. “ Pankow ” whispers the neighbor. Then someone comes with a bagpipe: “ Amazing Grace ”. When he briefly chimes in between "Risen from the ruins", the audience can no longer be held. Reinhard Lakomy with flowing white knight hair and mustache is the solo entertainer on keyboard and rhythm machine : 'We lay down in the moss'. Laughter."

“At the latest when Aurora Lacasa appears , westerners feel like they are at the festival of political songs . Back then in the 'capital'. With the October Club and internationalism . The 80-year-old Gisela May in a black trouser suit shows very casually how you can move a western heart without too much poses with Kurt Weill and the 'Song of the Old Lovers'. Veronika Fischer is more popular. 'That is our identity!' A friendly lady explains to the Westerner. 'We grew up with these songs. Nobody can take them away from us. It's not something that comes from the west! '"

“This pathos . The many classical sounding pianos and finely studied guitars, the tendency to operetta-like and bombast rock à la Deep Purple with German lyrics: 'Sea of Eternity' or 'My heart should be a water'. Perhaps with this music it is like with the Palace of the Republic : some would like to tear it down immediately, while others would like to keep it forever. Because maybe they did their first dance there. And nothing else matters. "
