Bayon is a music group that was founded in the GDR in 1971 . Her music moves between folklore , classical , jazz and rock . The meditative character of the predominantly purely instrumental compositions is intended to stimulate the audience's imagination . For this reason, meaningful titles were not given for the pieces. Many of them have common names like Suite or Nocturne .

Bayon plays with changing line-ups, with the “hard core” consisting of founding member Christoph Theusner and Sonny Thet.

Name of the band

The name of the group is derived from the historical Bayon temple complex in Cambodia.

Band history

Christoph Theusner received lessons in guitar and lute from his father Egon Theusner at an early age . While studying architecture in Weimar , he met Sonny Thet, who had been sent to Weimar by Prince Sihanouk to study classical music. Bayon emerged in April 1971 from the formation Garage Players (also known as GP combo ), which had more of blues rock in their repertoire. The survival is based on Sonny Thet's decision not to return to his homeland after the coup in Cambodia . In fact, most of his family and former Bayon cellist Li Song Leng were killed by the Khmer Rouge .

From 1971 they recorded music for the radio, which went back to the initiative of the producer Luise Mirsch (for example Suite No. 1 in the style of progressive rock ). At times, up to eleven musicians were on stage at Bayon concerts, as a complete brass section was also used. From around 1976 the chamber music quartet line-up crystallized. Her first LP Bayon was not released until 1977, with adaptations of classical music and her own compositions such as Suite No. 3 . The cover shows the temple tower of Bayon, with the stone heads bearing the facial features of the four most important musicians:

Bayon began making music for the theater as early as the 1970s, for example in 1979 for a production of Traktor / Die Schlacht von Heiner Müller , and later also for performances of Urfaust and Ulrich Plenzdorf (stage version of Legende vom Glück ohne Ende ). In 1981 Bayon wrote the soundtrack for the literary film adaptation of GDR television, Deep Blue Snow . In the 1980s, the group performed together with the Berlin pantomime and dancer Anke Gerber . In 2006, the movie was the soundtrack The Lives of Others the song rendezvous in the middle of the rain republished in which the poem Bayon try it by Wolfgang Borchert use as text.

In 2010 Bayon was awarded the Honorary RUTH , the German Prize for World Music .
