Rakatak

Rakatak is the generic term for certain rattle-like percussion instruments , the name of a Pankow percussion group and the annual Pankow drum festival .

A distinction is made between two different variants of such instruments:

  • Rakatak : an open African maracas in the shape of a slotted bamboo tube with an inserted, movable clapper that alternately strikes the bamboo tube by moving the instrument back and forth. Depending on the diameter of the bamboo tube, this creates lighter or deeper tones.
  • " Rakatak Sennpo ": a pumpkin rattle, consisting of a branch fork with loosely drawn, decorated pumpkin slices that produce a dry, bright sound when shaken. This species is a forerunner of the Spanish castanets .

The Pankow percussion group Rakatak took its name from the corresponding instrument.
